For most adults, Global Entry is not free at checkout: U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) charges a non-refundable $120 application fee. You may avoid paying it if you qualify for the under-18 waiver, already hold eligible NEXUS or SENTRI membership, or have a credit card that reimburses the fee after you pay it. A card credit is reimbursement—not a waiver or a promise of approval.
Three ways to pay $0 out of pocket
| Route | Who may qualify | How the cost is covered | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minor fee waiver | An applicant under 18 whose parent or legal guardian is enrolled in a trusted traveler program or has a pending application | CBP may waive the application fee when the requirements are met | Guardian status, how to associate the application in TTP, and the child’s interview requirements. CBP eligibility guidance |
| Existing NEXUS or SENTRI membership | Members who meet CBP’s eligibility and identity-data conditions | Eligible members can use Global Entry airport processing without a separate Global Entry application fee | Nationality or residency conditions and whether CBP has required fingerprints and identity documents. CBP SENTRI FAQ |
| Card statement credit | A cardholder with an eligible card and an available benefit | The issuer may reimburse the application charge as a statement credit after payment | Eligible card, required payment method, credit interval, previous use, and current terms |
| Standard application | An applicant who does not qualify for the other routes | The applicant pays CBP’s $120 fee | The fee is non-refundable, even if CBP denies the application. CBP application guidance |
Can a child get Global Entry without paying the fee?
A child under 18 may qualify for a fee waiver if a parent or legal guardian is enrolled in a trusted traveler program or has a pending application. The child still needs their own Trusted Traveler Programs (TTP) account and application. Follow the current TTP instructions to connect the child’s application to the guardian’s status; do not assume every minor qualifies automatically. CBP’s eligibility guidance explains the conditions.
Can NEXUS or SENTRI membership cover Global Entry?
Some current NEXUS members and qualifying U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents who hold SENTRI membership can use Global Entry airport processing without paying a second Global Entry application fee. Whether you need to take further action depends on your status and whether CBP already has the required fingerprints and identity documents. Check your account and CBP’s SENTRI FAQ for your circumstances.
There is an important exception for Mexican nationals who are SENTRI members: CBP instructs them to apply for Global Entry through TTP. Do not assume that SENTRI membership alone gives you the benefit in every case.

Can a credit card reimburse the Global Entry fee?
Yes. CBP says some card issuers reimburse the TTP application fee and advises applicants to check with their issuer. Typically, you pay CBP first with the eligible card; the issuer then applies a statement credit if the purchase and benefit meet its terms. The credit does not waive the fee at checkout or guarantee that CBP will approve the application.
These issuer examples were checked on October 8, 2026. They illustrate how benefits work, not a recommendation to open a card solely for this credit.
- American Express: Its eligible-card benefits include a $120 Global Entry statement credit, generally once every four years. The Platinum Card benefit page also describes a choice between the Global Entry credit and a TSA PreCheck credit. Check the current Platinum Card terms and eligible-card benefit information, including whether a prior claim affects your eligibility.
- Chase United Explorer: The card page describes a statement credit every four years for a Global Entry, TSA PreCheck, or NEXUS application fee charged to the card. Review the current card terms.
- Capital One Spark Miles: Its disclosure describes a credit of up to $120 every four years for a qualifying Global Entry or TSA PreCheck fee charged to the card. Check the current benefit disclosure.
Benefits can change, and eligibility may depend on the exact card, payment method, benefit interval, and prior use. Before applying, check the issuer’s live terms and confirm the fee charged to your card qualifies. Compare any annual fee and other card terms with the value you expect to receive; a $120 credit alone does not establish that a card is worth opening.
How to apply and use a fee credit
- Check your route first. Confirm whether the applicant qualifies for a minor waiver or already has eligible NEXUS or SENTRI membership. Start from CBP’s Global Entry application instructions and use the official TTP system; avoid third-party sites that charge to submit the government application.
- Submit the application in the applicant’s TTP account. Pay the fee unless TTP indicates that a qualifying minor waiver applies. CBP collects the standard $120 fee through TTP, and it is non-refundable even if the application is denied.
- Complete the interview after conditional approval. Follow the applicant-specific instructions in TTP to schedule and attend the required interview. Payment or a card reimbursement does not determine approval; CBP makes the eligibility decision.
- Track the issuer credit if you are using a card benefit. Charge the application fee to the eligible card as required, then monitor the account and follow the issuer’s terms if the expected statement credit does not appear.
What “free” does—and does not—mean
Unless you qualify for a waiver or have an existing membership that provides the relevant processing benefit, the standard adult application costs $120 upfront. A reimbursement may bring your eventual out-of-pocket cost to zero, but only if your card benefit applies and the issuer credits the charge. In all cases, payment coverage is separate from the application process and CBP’s decision.
