You can usually deposit or withdraw money at your own credit union through a branch, a supported ATM, or an electronic service. Mobile check deposit and access at another credit union depend on what your institution offers and which networks it participates in. There is no single procedure that applies to every U.S. credit union, so check your account’s current instructions, fees, limits, and funds-availability policy before relying on a particular method.
Ways to deposit money at a credit union
Choose a channel that accepts the kind of funds you have. Cash generally requires an in-person or supported ATM transaction; checks may also qualify for mobile deposit; wages and other recurring payments can be sent electronically.
At a branch teller
Bring the cash or check to a branch and follow its deposit procedure. For a check, make sure it is payable to the account holder and endorse it as your credit union instructs. Endorsement requirements can differ, so use the institution’s directions rather than assuming one rule works everywhere.
At an ATM
Use an ATM that your credit union identifies as accepting deposits, and follow the prompts. Deposit capability is not available at every ATM. The NCUA’s consumer guide to credit union debit cards notes that physical employer checks can be deposited at a branch and many ATM kiosks; confirm that a specific machine accepts the type of deposit you plan to make.

By mobile check deposit
If your credit union offers mobile deposit, use its app instructions to photograph and submit an eligible check. Check the app or ask the credit union about eligible checks, endorsement wording, deposit limits, and holds before submitting it. These rules are institution-specific; not every credit union offers the service. The NCUA’s consumer information on credit union services discusses services that may be available, but your credit union’s current terms determine what you can use.
By direct deposit or electronic transfer
You can arrange for wages or benefits to be deposited electronically, or transfer funds from another account if your credit union supports the transfer. Confirm the account details and processing schedule with the credit union or the organization sending the payment. NCUA consumer guidance says direct-deposit funds must be available no later than the business day after the credit union receives them electronically; that timing applies to electronic receipt, not necessarily to a check or a transfer initiated through another service. See MyCreditUnion.gov’s deposit-account guidance.

At a participating shared branch
Some credit unions participate in shared-branch networks, which may let members transact at another participating credit union location. Services can include deposits, balance inquiries, check cashing, and requests for transfers or official checks. Participation does not mean every location offers every service to every member. Verify the location, your eligibility, and the transaction you need before traveling. The NCUA describes shared branching in its Credit Union Service Organizations examiner guide.
Ways to withdraw money
At an ATM
- Use your credit union’s ATM or debit card at a compatible ATM, inserting or tapping it if the terminal supports that method.
- Enter your PIN, choose the withdrawal option, select or enter an amount, and follow the prompts.
- Review any fee shown before confirming. An ATM may charge a fee, and the terminal generally must disclose it before the transaction is completed. Your credit union may have separate account or network fees, so check its terms as well. The NCUA explains ATM fees in its debit-card guide.
At a branch teller
Ask to withdraw from your account and follow the branch’s verification procedure. Identification or other verification may be required, but requirements are set by the institution; check with your credit union if you are unsure what to bring.

At another credit union through shared branching
You may be able to withdraw at another credit union if your institution and the location participate in the same shared-branch arrangement and the service is available to you. Before going, confirm membership eligibility, accepted identification, transaction limits, and fees with your credit union or the network. Shared-branch access is not a universal entitlement at every credit union.
By transfer or authorized payment
You can move funds between eligible accounts or authorize recurring payments for bills, depending on the services your credit union supports. Confirm the destination account, authorization, and timing with the credit union and payee. A payment or transfer is not the same as receiving cash immediately at a teller or ATM.

When will a check deposit be available?
A check deposit may appear in your account before all of the funds are available to spend. Your credit union must disclose its funds-availability policy, and the actual timing can depend on the check, deposit method, account history, deposit amount, and applicable exceptions.
MyCreditUnion.gov’s deposit-account guidance says cash deposits are generally readily available and describes next-business-day access for certain qualifying checks of $225 or less deposited in person. It also discusses ordinary availability timelines and exceptions that may apply to new accounts, large deposits, redeposited checks, or situations where the credit union reasonably believes a check may not be collectible. These are general U.S. guidelines, not a promise about a particular transaction. Ask your credit union for the specific date your funds will be available.

Deposits made at a nonproprietary ATM can have a later maximum availability period under Regulation CC. The NCUA’s funds-availability examination guide discusses that rule and the $225 threshold. It is regulatory examination material, not an individualized disclosure for your account; your credit union’s policy and the rules applicable to your deposit determine when you can use the funds.
What to check before choosing a method
- Channel availability: Confirm whether your credit union offers the branch, ATM deposit, mobile deposit, electronic transfer, or shared-branch service you want.
- Transaction type: Check whether the channel accepts cash, checks, or electronic funds. A cash-accepting ATM or a mobile check option cannot be assumed.
- Timing: Ask when deposited funds will be available, especially if you need to make a payment soon.
- Fees and limits: Review your credit union’s account disclosures and any ATM or shared-network fees. Limits vary; there is no universal limit for all credit unions.
- Requirements: Follow the institution’s instructions for endorsements, identity verification, eligible checks, and transfer authorization.
Can you use another credit union?
Sometimes. A different credit union is useful for a transaction only if the relevant institutions participate in a shared network and that location offers the service you need. Check with your own credit union or the network before traveling; do not assume that another institution will accept your deposit or withdrawal simply because both are credit unions.
