How to Edit a Portfolio in Yahoo Finance

Yahoo Finance portfolio edits can change list settings, tracked tickers, or recorded transactions. Follow the right steps for your browser or app—and note the limitation for brokerage-linked holdings.

“Edit a portfolio” in Yahoo Finance can mean changing the list’s settings, adding or removing tracked tickers, or editing recorded holdings and transactions. The steps are different for each task—and transaction controls vary by platform. Use the guide below that matches what you want to change.

Choose the kind of edit you need

Your goal What to change Where the steps are covered
Change the portfolio list itself Open the list’s settings; on iOS, list controls also let you rename or delete a list. Desktop or mobile browser, or the iOS app
Change which symbols it tracks Add or remove tickers, or change their order. Desktop or mobile browser
Update recorded shares or a trade Edit or add a holding transaction, or delete a transaction lot. Desktop browser, iOS app, or Android app

Yahoo’s portfolio-list guide covers list settings and ticker operations. Its transaction guide covers lots and holdings. Creating a portfolio—by linking a brokerage account, importing a CSV, or creating one manually—is a separate task, not an editing method.

Edit portfolio settings or tracked tickers in a browser

Desktop browser: change list settings

  1. Sign in to Yahoo Finance and click My Portfolio.
  2. Under My Portfolios, select the portfolio you want to change.
  3. Click the Settings icon in the upper-right area.
  4. Make your changes and click Save.

Mobile browser: change list settings

  1. Sign in to Yahoo Finance and open the menu.
  2. Tap My Portfolio, then select the portfolio under My Portfolios.
  3. Tap the Settings icon, make your changes, and tap Save.

Add, remove, or reorder tickers

On desktop, open My Portfolio, choose the list, and select Add tickers. Search for and select the symbols you want, then add them. To remove a symbol, click the trash icon at the far right of its row. To reorder symbols, use the displayed arrows or drag and drop, then select Done. Yahoo’s mobile-browser guide documents equivalent add, remove, and reorder operations; see its platform instructions if the controls differ on your screen.

iOS app: rename, reorder, or delete a list

The iOS app has separate list-management controls for renaming or deleting a portfolio list and reordering lists. Follow Yahoo’s iOS list-management instructions. These actions change the list, not the holdings or transactions recorded inside it.

Edit a holding or transaction

Desktop browser: add, edit, or delete a lot

  1. Open My Portfolio and select the list.
  2. Expand the controls beside the symbol and open Transactions.
  3. To add a lot, click Add transaction and enter its details. Yahoo says a new transaction or edited transaction line saves automatically when you click outside the entry box.
  4. To delete a lot, click the delete icon at the end of its transaction row and confirm.

Yahoo describes separate lots as a way to track multiple purchases, including dividend reinvestment plan (DRIP) purchases. The same transaction guide explains that a negative share quantity can represent a short position, but the Price Paid field does not accept a negative value; these are data-entry rules, not investment guidance. See Yahoo’s transaction instructions.

iOS app: edit or delete a transaction

  1. On Home, under Portfolios & Watchlists, tap View Details.
  2. Use Add Holdings to enter transaction data.
  3. To change or remove an existing transaction, open All transactions, select the transaction, and tap Edit.
  4. Save the edit, or follow the delete prompts. Yahoo’s instructions say to tap Delete transaction twice to complete deletion.

See Yahoo’s iOS transaction instructions if the labels or screen layout differ.

Android app: edit a transaction

Yahoo’s Android instructions route you through the list’s holdings: open the menu arrow beside the symbol, go to the Transactions box, select the transaction, make the edit, and save. Yahoo’s more general portfolio guide also describes adding transactions and says the stock price is auto-populated based on the transaction date. App labels can differ between Yahoo help articles, so match the controls to the current screen and consult the Android holdings instructions or My Portfolios tracking guide.

Why a holding may not be editable—and how portfolio calculations work

Brokerage-linked portfolios

Yahoo says manually entered holdings can be added and updated, with an exception for portfolios linked from brokerage accounts. If the holding comes from a linked brokerage account, the manual lot-editing steps above do not apply; Yahoo identifies linked accounts as an exception in its transaction help.

Cost basis and share adjustments

Yahoo says its AC/Share calculation uses first in, first out (FIFO): when shares are sold, the calculation removes the earliest shares bought first. For a stock split, Yahoo advises updating both share quantity and cost to reflect the split. Its illustration—not a general performance figure—shows a 10-for-1 split turning 50 shares into 500 and an example $450 cost per share into $45. See Get Started with Yahoo Finance Portfolio for the calculation and split guidance.

CSV imports and less common portfolio entries

If you are rebuilding a portfolio from a CSV, Yahoo recommends downloading a current CSV and matching its format; each ticker in the file must include holdings. For cash or private-equity-style tracking, Yahoo documents $$CASH and custom symbols beginning with $$, subject to restrictions on special characters. These are distinct from ordinary ticker-list edits; consult Yahoo’s portfolio guide and cash and private-equity instructions.
