The best school backpack is the one that fits the student, carries the day’s actual load comfortably, and suits the route to school. Start by checking school rules, then have the student try a properly loaded bag before buying. No single brand or style is best for every student.
Start with fit, not the label or a growth spurt
“Bigger is not necessarily better,” writes Saji Azerf, MD, FAAP, for the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). Choose a pack proportional to the student’s height and try it on the student who will carry it. A bag that is too large can be harder to control and may encourage carrying unnecessary items.
With the bag on, check that its bottom rests in the curve of the lower back. The top should sit about 1–2 inches below the shoulders, and the bottom should not hang more than 4 inches below the waistline. Which features are worth choosing?

The AAP recommends broad, adjustable straps, a padded back, and compartments that help distribute contents. Israel’s Ministry of Health also advises reflective details and practical bag dimensions; those recommendations are government guidance for Israel, not a U.S. rule. Choose a carrying style for the student’s route
Two-strap backpack
A conventional two-strap pack is a practical choice for most students when it fits, stays close to the back, and is worn on both shoulders. Its main advantage is straightforward carrying; the trade-off is that the student still has to wear and adjust it properly and keep its load reasonable.
Wheeled backpack
Wheels may help when the load is heavy and the route is long and relatively smooth. They add weight to the bag itself, however, and can be awkward on stairs, rough ground, in crowded hallways, or around lockers. Check school rules before buying: some schools restrict wheels or require a particular bag. The route guidance comes from Israel’s Ministry of Health; school-uniform constraints are also noted by Australian consumer group CHOICE, so neither should be mistaken for a rule at a particular school. Ask the student’s school directly.

For younger students, control in a busy hallway is another consideration. Consumer Reports quoted an orthopedic surgeon warning that a rolling bag can get away from younger elementary-age children; its buying guide is archival, so treat that as a caution rather than a current model recommendation. Pack for the day and keep the load manageable
- Remove what is not needed. Check the contents each day and leave unnecessary books, supplies, and other items at home or in a locker if available.
- Put heavier items nearest the back. Use the compartment closest to the student’s body for heavy books or a computer, rather than letting them pull the bag away from the back.
- Use both straps. Adjust them evenly so the pack sits close and does not hang low or swing.
- Check the load with the student wearing it. The AAP recommends keeping a child’s backpack at no more than 15% of body weight. This is the AAP’s guidance, not proof of a universal safety threshold; aim to keep the load as light as practical. Leaning forward or difficulty walking are signs to reassess the load and fit.
These packing and load recommendations come from the AAP’s backpack-safety guidance. A separate estimate from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission found an annual average of 1,200 backpack-related injuries treated in emergency rooms among children under 19 during 2019–2021. That is a U.S. estimate for that period, not a count of all backpack injuries; it underscores why fit and carrying habits deserve attention. The CPSC announcement was published August 16, 2022.

Use a school-bag checklist before buying
- Confirm the school’s requirements, including whether wheeled bags are allowed.
- Have the student try the bag on; check its position and adjustability rather than buying one to grow into.
- Check for two broad adjustable shoulder straps, a padded back, and compartments that support sensible packing.
- Consider reflective details if the student walks in low light.
- Think through the actual commute: stairs, rough ground, crowded corridors, and lockers can change whether wheels are useful.
- Compare price, warranty, and durability for the options you are considering. The guidance cited here does not establish current prices, warranties, durability rankings, or a best-performing model, so compare those details for the specific products available to you.
A sports or outdoor bag can also be an option if it meets the same fit, school-policy, and practical requirements; the category or brand name alone does not establish suitability.
When a backpack may not be the whole answer
The AAP says an improperly worn or overly heavy backpack can contribute to back, neck, or shoulder pain, but backpacks have not been shown to cause scoliosis or other long-term spine problems. If a student has pain when not carrying the bag, has an injury, or has recently had surgery, speak with a pediatrician. The AAP suggests considering alternatives such as a second set of books or access to a locker when appropriate.
