How to Calculate Bonus Pay and Taxes in 2026

A bonus is supplemental wages, but the 22% federal rate is an optional withholding method—not a special final tax rate. See how payroll estimates affect your take-home pay.

To estimate bonus take-home pay, start with the gross bonus, then account for federal income tax withholding, Social Security and Medicare taxes, and any applicable state or local withholding and other payroll deductions. For federal withholding in 2026, an employer may use an optional 22% flat method for qualifying separately identified supplemental wages or calculate withholding using the aggregate method. Neither result is necessarily your final tax on the bonus: 22% is a withholding rate, not a special tax rate on bonus income.

Start with gross bonus and net bonus

Gross bonus is the amount before payroll deductions. Net bonus is what remains after withholding and other deductions. A smaller deposit than the stated bonus does not, by itself, mean the bonus was taxed at a separate or higher final income-tax rate; payroll withholding is a prepayment toward your tax bill.

The IRS treats bonuses as supplemental wages. For federal rules in 2026, the employer’s withholding method depends partly on how the bonus is paid and identified. The federal rules below do not determine state or local treatment, which depends on your jurisdiction.

How federal income tax withholding on a bonus is calculated

For a separately identified bonus, an employer that withheld federal income tax from your regular wages in the current or preceding calendar year may choose between the optional flat method and the aggregate method. These are employer withholding methods, not a choice of final tax rate for the employee. See the IRS Publication 15 (2026), Employer’s Tax Guide.

Method How payroll calculates withholding When it applies
Optional flat rate Withholds federal income tax at 22% of qualifying supplemental wages. If an employee’s supplemental wages during the calendar year exceed $1 million, the IRS requires 37% withholding on the excess. The employer may use the optional flat method for separately identified supplemental wages if it withheld federal income tax from regular wages in the current or preceding calendar year. The $1 million threshold and 37% rate are the IRS’s 2026 rules.
Aggregate method Adds the bonus to relevant regular wages, calculates withholding on the combined amount under the applicable payroll method, then accounts for withholding already applied to regular wages and earlier supplemental payments in that payroll period. An available method for separately identified supplemental wages when the employer meets the applicable withholding conditions. The calculation depends on payroll details, including the employee’s Form W-4 information.
Combined, not separately identified Payroll treats the combined wages as a single payment for a regular payroll period rather than applying the separate-bonus flat method. When regular wages and the bonus are paid together without separately identifying their amounts.

What the IRS example shows

In a 2026 IRS example, a separately paid $1,000 bonus and $2,000 in regular wages from the most recent base-salary pay date result in $114 of withholding under the example’s aggregate method, or $220 under the optional 22% flat method. Those are outcomes under the example’s stated payroll assumptions, not estimates that apply to every employee. The IRS explains the methods in Publication 15 (2026).

Estimate your bonus paycheck step by step

  1. Find the gross bonus. Use the bonus amount before payroll deductions, not the amount deposited into your account.
  2. Check how payroll identifies it. A separately listed bonus may qualify for the supplemental-wage methods above. If it is combined with regular wages without separate identification, payroll treats the total as one regular-period payment.
  3. Identify the federal income tax method. If the bonus is separately identified and the employer meets the withholding condition, ask whether payroll is using the optional flat method or the aggregate method. The latter depends on the relevant regular wages and payroll calculations.
  4. Account for payroll taxes and other deductions. Social Security and Medicare taxes apply to supplemental wages regardless of the federal income tax withholding method. Other deductions may also reduce the deposit.
  5. Check state and local withholding separately. Rates and rules depend on where you work and live; the federal IRS publications cited here do not establish your state or local result.
  6. Compare with your pay statement. Review the bonus’s gross amount and the listed withholdings and deductions. For a more realistic estimate of full-year withholding, include your regular pay, pay frequency, Form W-4 settings, and relevant year-to-date wages.

Why bonus withholding is not your final tax bill

Withholding is money sent to the government during the year toward your eventual tax. Your final federal income tax is determined as part of your full-year tax calculation, not by applying a special 22% bonus tax. The amount withheld from a bonus can therefore differ from the amount of additional tax attributable to that income once your full return is calculated. Do not interpret the 22% method as a guarantee of what you will owe or receive as a refund.

Payroll taxes that also affect take-home bonus pay

Federal income tax withholding is only one possible deduction. The IRS states that supplemental wages are subject to Social Security, Medicare, and FUTA taxes regardless of which federal income tax withholding method is used. Social Security withholding can depend on your year-to-date wages. Your actual deposit may also reflect other payroll deductions; the precise effect depends on your circumstances. See IRS Publication 15 (2026), section 7.

What you need for a closer estimate

The federal withholding worksheets and tables in IRS Publication 15-T (2026), Federal Income Tax Withholding Methods vary with the employee’s Form W-4 version and payroll details. A useful estimate of your own withholding therefore needs more than the bonus amount alone.
