How much did Nottingham Forest’s squad cost?
A comparison posted in April 2022 put Forest’s squad cost at £30.8 million, using the latest accounts available to its author at the time. The same post associated the figure with 70 points and calculated £0.44 million per point. The comparison is a historical snapshot; it should not be read as the transfer fees paid for Forest’s 2021/22 players or as a current squad estimate. Reddit comparison, April 2022
The accessible information does not verify Forest’s exact position among every Championship side in that comparison. It is therefore safer to report the figure and its date than to assign Forest a league-wide rank.
Can Forest be compared with Championship squads today?
Not as a current Championship club. Forest’s 2024/25 accounts analysis describes the club as a Premier League side. The Nottingham Forest Supporters’ Trust lists a 2024/25 player-registration squad cost of £313.966 million. The Trust defines registration costs as transfer fees and certain related costs amortised over player contracts; it is an accounting measure, not a market valuation. PSRwatch separately gives an accounts-anchored estimate of £218 million for Forest’s 2026/27 squad. It identifies this as a modelled estimate and distinguishes it from its £164 million sum of named player-row costs, which it says is a decomposition rather than a replacement for the account-anchored figure. The £30.8 million, £313.966 million and £218 million figures cover different periods and scopes or methods. They cannot be treated as a like-for-like trend or placed together in one ranking without reconciling those differences.

What does “squad cost” mean?
The phrase can refer to several distinct measures. A comparison is meaningful only when the measure, date, squad scope and currency are consistent.

How to make a fair comparison with Championship sides
For a comparison of Forest’s 2021/22 Championship squad with rivals, use one historical source and one definition throughout. The comparison should disclose:
- Measure: fees paid, amortised registration cost, remaining book value or estimated market value.
- Date and season: the relevant reporting year or valuation cut-off.
- Squad scope: first-team squad, registered players or another defined group.
- Currency: use the same currency and conversion basis for every club.
- Player treatment: explain how the data handles loans, free transfers, undisclosed fees and academy players.
Transfermarkt provides purchase-value data, but the accessible page did not expose a complete historical table for the comparison.
