That is a press estimate—not a figure confirmed by either club—calculated using an estimated £120,000 weekly salary over 42 weeks.
How the £5.04 million estimate was calculated
EFL Analysis estimated the saving by multiplying a reported Capology salary estimate of £120,000 a week by 42 weeks: £120,000 × 42 = £5,040,000. The result is a modeled full-period figure, not a verified statement of Southampton’s actual costs or savings. EFL Analysis attributed the weekly estimate to Capology. Neither club disclosed Ramsdale’s contractual wage.
What was confirmed—and what was reported
Southampton announced on 2 August 2025 that Ramsdale had joined Newcastle on loan for the 2025/26 season. The club also said he had made 32 appearances for Southampton in the prior season. Newcastle’s announcement, reproduced by The Mag, described the move as a season-long loan.
The financial terms were not included in the clubs’ announcements. Reporting said Newcastle would cover Ramsdale’s wages and pay a loan fee of about £4 million; another report put the fee at £4 million to £5 million. Those remain reported terms, not officially disclosed figures. EFL Analysis relayed the roughly £4 million figure, while The Mag reported the range.

The wage estimate and loan fee are separate
The estimated £5.04 million is the wage calculation alone. The reported loan fee is a distinct payment and should not be described as part of the wage saving. Adding the two would produce a separate, approximate gross figure, but it would combine estimates and reported terms rather than establish Southampton’s realized net benefit.
The available figures do not establish whether Southampton retained any share of Ramsdale’s wages, or account for bonuses, taxes or the clubs’ accounting treatment. Without those details, the actual net financial effect cannot be calculated from the published information.
