J. Walker wealthy. It was one tool in a growing Black beauty economy built around products, sales networks, salon services and professional training. Walker promoted the comb, but the National Museum of African American History and Culture says she did not invent it; her business story also follows the earlier work of Annie Turnbo Malone.
What was an electric hot comb?
A hot comb is a heated styling comb used to straighten hair. Depending on the model and setting, it could be heated on a stove, in a salon heater or by plugging it into a wall. The Smithsonian’s account describes all three heat sources, so “hot comb” does not refer only to an electric appliance. The National Museum of African American History and Culture explains the tool’s use and history.
Heat styling with a comb should not be confused with chemical straightening. The Smithsonian’s hair-care overview places hair growers and pressing oils in the market by 1906, then notes that stronger chemical straightening products were used in shops from the 1930s. These were distinct approaches, not different names for the same process. Smithsonian: Hair Care.
Who invented the hot comb?
The available museum evidence does not identify one inventor. It does, however, directly correct the familiar claim about Walker: “It is a common misconception that Madam C.J. Walker invented the hot comb,” the National Museum of African American History and Culture says. Walker promoted the tool and built a major hair-care business, but promotion is not proof of invention. NMAAHC: Sizzle.

How did the hot comb fit into a beauty business?
The entrepreneurial story is bigger than a single appliance. Black beauty businesses combined products and methods with demonstrations, personal selling, salon services and training. A tool used in styling could be part of the practical work customers encountered, while the wider business connected that work to products, sales and education. The sources establish the hot comb’s place in this ecosystem, but do not quantify how much revenue or employment it generated.
Annie Turnbo Malone built an earlier enterprise
Annie Turnbo Malone founded Poro and developed a hair-care business that included beauty education. Walker worked as Malone’s sales agent in 1905, before starting her own business. That connection places Walker’s entrepreneurship in an existing field of Black beauty products and sales rather than presenting her success as an isolated invention story. Walker developed a system, not just a product
Walker’s hair grower became part of what was called the “Walker Method” or “Walker System of Beauty Culture.” The model linked products to sales and instruction; Smithsonian and NMAAHC accounts also describe beauty schools and businesses that employed African Americans, mainly women. Those sources do not isolate the hot comb’s contribution to the system, so it is more accurate to treat the comb as one element in the business than as its financial engine. What salon work reveals about the tool
A surviving straightening comb in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History collection shows the hot comb’s professional setting. The heavy metal fine-tooth comb has a metal neck and pink wooden handle; Marjorie Joyner used it in her Chicago salon from the 1920s through the 1970s. The record identifies Joyner as a stylist, inventor and Walker protégé, as well as a participant in Walker Beauty Schools and beauty-business education. It is a straightening comb, not evidence that this particular object was electric. Smithsonian National Museum of American History: Straightening Comb.

Why the hot comb’s meaning is debated
The hot comb expanded the range of styles available for Black hair. At the same time, the tool sits within a history in which straight hair could be treated as more orderly in some professional settings, and its use has been debated in relation to Eurocentric beauty standards. Those meanings are not universal: people’s reasons for styling their hair differ, and the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage presents the subject as a tension rather than a single community viewpoint. Smithsonian Folklife: It’s More Than ‘Just’ Hair.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the history can—and cannot—say about business impact
The sources support a clear conclusion: the hot comb belonged to professional styling and was promoted by Walker, while Black beauty entrepreneurship grew through interconnected products, sales, services and training. They do not provide a hot-comb sales total, revenue share, user count or number of jobs attributable to the tool. Treating the comb as part of the business ecosystem is historically grounded; crediting it with a measured share of Walker’s success is not.
