Blackburn Rovers’ reported pursuit of Robert Lewandowski in April 2010 was discussed at figures ranging from roughly £3 million to £5 million. No source here establishes a final agreed fee: contemporary reports described Lech Poznań’s asking price, while Blackburn figures later recalled different amounts for the club’s discussions.
What fee was reported?
The most careful answer is a reported range of roughly £3 million to £5 million, not a confirmed transfer price. The figures refer to different accounts and stages of negotiations, so they should not be treated as competing quotes for one settled deal.
| Source and date | Reported figure | What it described |
|---|---|---|
| Sky Sports, 17 April 2010 | €5 million (£4.3 million) | Lech Poznań’s reported asking price; the article said Blackburn were willing to meet it. |
| The Independent, 21 April 2010 | £4.3 million bid; around £5 million asking price | Genoa’s reported rejected bid and the amount Lech was believed to want. |
| Sam Allardyce, speaking to BBC Sport, 26 April 2013 | Three or four million euros (£2.6 million or £3.5 million) | Allardyce’s uncertain later recollection of the amount requested in Blackburn’s discussions. |
| Martyn Glover, in a Sky Sports retrospective, 2020 | Around £3 million, rising to £4 million | Glover’s retrospective description of an outline proposal, not a completed or final fee. |
These accounts are not necessarily describing the same number: some concern Lech’s reported valuation or another club’s bid, and others are later memories of Blackburn’s discussions. The exchange rates shown are those reported by the respective sources, not recalculations.
Why did Blackburn’s pursuit fail?
The planned visit was disrupted
Lewandowski, then at Lech Poznań, was invited to Blackburn to watch the club play Everton. The visit was called off after volcanic ash disrupted flights in Britain and Poland. His agent, Cezary Kucharski, told Sky Sports that the cancelled flights prevented the trip and that driving made little sense.

Blackburn were financially constrained
In a 2013 BBC Sport interview, former Blackburn manager Sam Allardyce said the club was “particularly strapped financially” and recalled that chairman John Williams and the board did not want to commit the requested amount. Allardyce said he watched Lewandowski play but did not meet him. His account makes finances another factor; the flight disruption alone should not be presented as the proven reason the transfer did not happen.
Did Blackburn agree a fee with Lech Poznań?
The cited reports do not establish that Blackburn and Lech agreed a fee, or that a signed Blackburn transfer deal existed. Sky Sports reported that Blackburn were willing to meet Lech’s reported asking price, but that is not proof an agreement was reached. Allardyce and Glover later recalled discussions at lower or differently framed figures.

Where did Lewandowski go instead?
Borussia Dortmund and Genoa were among the other clubs reported to be interested. The Independent said Genoa’s £4.3 million bid had been rejected; the BBC reports that Lewandowski signed for Borussia Dortmund in June 2010.
