Blackburn Rovers’ owners, the Rao family, built their wealth through India’s VH Group, a poultry business founded by B.V. Rao in 1971. It expanded from hatcheries into breeding, food processing, vaccines, animal health, feed and related operations. Venky’s reportedly paid £23 million for 99.9% of Blackburn Rovers in 2010, but that price does not reveal the family’s current wealth or how the purchase was financed.
How the Rao family’s business began
The VH Group says it was established in 1971, when founder B.V. Rao set up Venkateshwara Hatcheries in Pune. That account comes from the company itself, which describes the venture as the start of the wider group. VH Group: About Us
The original business was poultry-focused. The group says it later diversified into breeding, processing, animal health and other connected fields. These are the company’s descriptions of its own activities, not a complete independent accounting of all the businesses or their financial contribution.
What businesses sit behind the VH Group name?
The group’s stated operations extend across much of the poultry supply chain and adjacent areas. Its company profile also describes egg powder and wind-energy operations. VH Group: Our Business

- Lightweight, Classic fit, Double-needle sleeve and bottom hem
- Hatcheries, breeding and genetics: hatcheries, broiler and layer breeding, poultry genetics, and specific-pathogen-free eggs.

- Animal health: poultry vaccines, diagnostics, biosecurity, nutrition and health products.
- Farm inputs and equipment: feed and poultry-farming equipment.
- Related activities: soya-related products and wind energy, as described by the group.
This breadth helps explain the business source of the family’s money: it was built around poultry production and services, then diversified into connected industries. The available information does not establish how much wealth came from any one business line.
Venky’s (India) Limited is not the whole group
Venky’s (India) Limited is a listed Indian public company, but it is only one disclosed part of the wider VH Group structure. Its annual report for the year ended 31 March 2022 identified Venkateshwara Hatcheries Private Limited as its holding company, with a 51.02% equity stake. Venky’s (India) Limited: Annual Reports

That figure describes the ownership relationship reported for the listed company in 2021–22. It is not a current ownership update, a consolidated balance sheet for every VH Group business, or a disclosure of the Rao family’s personal finances. Group revenue, company profit, the value of the businesses and family net worth are different measures and should not be treated as interchangeable.
What Venky’s paid for Blackburn Rovers
RTÉ reported in November 2010 that Venky’s acquired the Jack Walker Trust’s 99.9% shareholding in Blackburn Rovers for £23 million, with the sale confirmation attributed to the club board. RTÉ: Blackburn Rovers takeover report

That is the reported purchase price for the stake, not evidence of the source of the money. The transaction figure does not say whether the acquisition involved borrowing, how the funds were divided among buyers, or how much liquid wealth the family had then or has now.

A 2012 feature in The Independent reported estimates of group turnover, profits and family wealth. Those are dated press estimates, not current audited figures, and turnover is not profit or personal net worth. The Independent: The Rao family and Blackburn Rovers (2012)

The figures available here do not establish a current consolidated financial position for the private group or an audited present-day net-worth figure for the Rao family. The defensible answer is therefore about the source of the family business wealth—VH Group’s poultry-centered operations and diversification—not a precise current personal fortune.
