From reporter to presenter
He left reporting to create and host Acun Firarda, a travel programme that helped make him a familiar figure across Turkey. Ilıcalı said in the 2018 interview that the show sometimes reached the top ratings position; that is his account, not an independently audited ratings record.
A hit format helped establish his production career
Ilıcalı said the Turkish version of Deal or No Deal had failed twice before he produced and hosted it. Acun Medya turned television success into a scalable business
Acun Medya says Ilıcalı founded the company in 2004. Rather than relying only on programmes he personally presented, the company built a business around acquiring established formats, adapting them for local audiences and producing them for broadcasters. What the reported scale means
In a CNN Türk interview, Ilıcalı described producing in 15 countries and making 1,500 episodes a year, saying successful media production brings significant income. His first business venture ended in a loss
Television was not Ilıcalı’s first attempt at business. In a 2008 interview with Habertürk, he said he entered retail in 1993 by importing branded jeans and shirts, opened a second shop, and then lost the business after a currency crisis increased the burden of foreign-currency debt. The BBC’s 2026 profile also recounts that he opened a shop in his early twenties and lost what he had when the currency collapsed. Ilıcalı’s football ownership came after his media business was established. The BBC describes his Hull City ownership as following an earlier interest in football and a brief spell owning Dutch club Fortuna Sittard. In a 2026 interview reported by The Guardian, Ilıcalı said he had spent more than £100 million on Hull’s squad.
