TAP Air Portugal’s Portugal Stopover lets eligible passengers add a 1–10 day (24–240 hour) stay in Lisbon or Porto to one leg of a trip. To use it, search your flights on TAP’s website and select the “Add a free Stopover” option if it appears; then choose the city, dates and whether the stop is outbound or on the return. The stop is marketed as free, but compare the full itinerary prices because flights, fare classes and airport taxes can differ.
Check whether your itinerary is eligible
TAP describes Portugal Stopover as an option for eligible medium- and long-haul journeys that include Lisbon or Porto. A stop can be added to either the outbound or return leg, but not both legs of the same trip. One-way bookings may qualify, and TAP describes availability across one-way, return and multi-city ticket types; eligibility depends on the specific itinerary.
Your trip may include multiple destinations, and you may fly into one city and return from another. The stop itself must be in Lisbon or Porto and last from 24 to 240 hours. TAP’s flight search is the practical way to confirm whether your route and dates qualify.
Book the stopover on TAP’s website
- Go to TAP’s Portugal Stopover page and open flight search. Enter your intended route and travel dates.
- If the itinerary is eligible, look for the “Add a free Stopover” option in the search flow.
- Choose Lisbon or Porto, set the stop dates or duration, and select whether the stop is on the outbound or return journey.
- Review the available flights and fares, then compare the complete itinerary and total price before booking.
If you already have a ticket, TAP says to contact its Contact Center to ask whether a stopover can be added. A change is not guaranteed; check the ticket’s fare conditions and any applicable change terms.

Compare the total price, not just the word “free”
TAP promotes the stop as free, or as two destinations for the price of one. That does not guarantee that adding a stop will leave your total ticket price unchanged. TAP notes that the compared itineraries may use different flights, fare classes or subclasses, and airport taxes. Compare the full prices and schedules shown for your dates, with and without the stop, before deciding.
Understand the 25% domestic-flight discount
TAP advertises a 25% discount on an additional domestic flight, but it applies only under specific conditions. According to TAP’s program terms, eligible routes include flights between Lisbon or Porto and Ponta Delgada, Terceira, Funchal, Porto Santo or Faro, as well as Faro–Funchal. The flight must be operated by TAP Air Portugal or TAP Express and take place during the stopover period.
Rank #2
- The discount applies to the base fare and airline surcharge (YQ), not airport taxes.
- It is valid for one booking and cannot be combined with other discounts or promotions.
- When the main stopover is booked on TAP’s website or through its Contact Center, TAP says the code is emailed after booking. Customers booking through a travel agent obtain the discount when booking the domestic flight.
Check the current terms before booking: a route, operator or travel date outside the offer’s rules will not qualify.
Plan for checked baggage at the 24-hour mark
The stop’s length affects what happens to checked bags. TAP’s Portugal Stopover FAQ says that for a stop of 24 hours or more, you must collect checked baggage in Lisbon or Porto and check it again for the onward flight. For a stop under 24 hours, baggage transfers onward unless you request at check-in to collect it at the stopover city.
Rank #3
If you need to buy extra checked baggage for an itinerary with a stay in Portugal exceeding 24 hours, TAP says it must be purchased for each flight. For itineraries without a Portugal Stopover, or with a stop under 24 hours, TAP says extra baggage is purchased once for the route.
Compare Lisbon and Porto on your own itinerary
Both cities are stopover options, but TAP’s program information does not establish that one is universally cheaper or better. Compare the eligible flights and total fare for your dates, the activities you want to do, lodging availability and any onward transport or domestic-flight plans. The best choice depends on the actual schedule and costs available for your trip.

TAP lists partner offers across hotels, restaurants, activities, tours, museums, cultural spaces and shops. Its partner page includes examples such as Azoris, Bensaude, Unlock Boutique Hotels, Vila Galé, Hilton, Holiday Inn and Real Hotels. Offers and conditions can vary; for example, the page’s Hilton offer describes a 15% discount on a minimum two-night stay at named Lisbon properties, with upgrades and welcome items subject to availability. Treat that as a specific offer, not a benefit guaranteed for every property or date.
Partner benefits are limited to passengers included in an eligible Stopover booking. TAP says customers access offers through the partners, and purchases, terms and changes are handled by the partner. Check the live offer and the provider’s own booking conditions for eligibility, dates and availability.
