The two documented routes are eligible Delta SkyMiles Platinum or Reserve American Express card benefits and eligible Delta Vacations packages. Card benefits can include an annual MQD Headstart and MQDs from qualifying purchases; Delta Vacations can award MQDs on eligible package costs, including some non-flight components. Each route has restrictions, so the amount charged or spent is not automatically the amount that qualifies.
Which options earn MQDs without flying?

These routes are not interchangeable. Card MQDs depend on eligible card membership and purchases; vacation-package MQDs depend on a qualifying, completed booking and Delta’s rules for allocating its components. Delta’s published terms are subject to change, so confirm the current rules before making a financial decision: Delta Medallion Program Overview, SkyMiles Program Rules.
How Delta card benefits earn MQDs
Delta identifies four eligible card types for its MQD Headstart and MQD Boost benefits: Delta SkyMiles Platinum, Platinum Business, Reserve, and Reserve Business American Express cards. These benefits are not available across all Delta cards.
MQD Headstart: a qualification-year deposit
For the 2026 qualification year, Delta lists a $2,500 MQD Headstart for each eligible card type per qualification year. Delta describes a maximum of four deposits across eligible card types, for up to $10,000 total. Account and card conditions apply, and changing card types by upgrading or downgrading does not automatically entitle a member to another deposit. MQD Boost: earning from eligible purchases
Delta’s published MQD Boost rates are $1 MQD per $20 in eligible purchases on Platinum and Platinum Business cards, and $1 MQD per $10 in eligible purchases on Reserve and Reserve Business cards. These rates apply to eligible purchases under the program terms, not every transaction or every dollar charged. Delta’s Credit Cards page and SkyMiles Program Rules describe the applicable restrictions.
Consider the card’s current annual fee, the value of benefits you will actually use, and whether the purchases would happen anyway. The MQD rate alone does not establish that applying for a card or redirecting spending is worthwhile. Delta’s terms allow it to withhold or remove MQDs in cases of abuse or misuse; do not manufacture spending to pursue status.

How Delta Vacations packages earn MQDs on non-flight costs
Delta Vacations says members can earn $1 MQD per $1 of eligible Total Package Price. The primary passenger/booker may earn MQDs on qualifying non-flight components such as lodging, car rentals, rides, and activities, as well as any separately calculated flight MQDs. The $1-for-$1 headline is not a promise that every amount on a receipt qualifies: Delta applies allocation rules to the package and its components. See Delta Vacations’ earning terms.
Package conditions and exclusions
- Delta calculates the flight portion under its exception-fare rules; the package’s non-flight allocation is not simply assumed from the total receipt.
- Group packages of eight or more have a different treatment: the ordinary package calculation does not apply to all passengers, and the flight component is handled under the exception-fare policy.
- Package portions not consumed by passengers do not earn MQDs. Payment with miles uses a separate calculation.
- Delta excludes certain taxes, fees, gratuities, booking charges, insurance, and similar items from eligible package value.
Because earning depends on completing eligible travel and on Delta’s allocation, this option is most sensible when the trip already fits your plans. A package booked mainly to pursue status can cost more than the status is worth to you; the published earning rate does not determine the trip’s financial value.

What does not earn MQDs without flying?
Delta’s program rules exclude a number of ancillary charges from MQD earning, including checked-bag fees, Sky Club memberships, Wi-Fi passes, onboard purchases, pet fees, mileage purchases, and ticket-change or service charges. Delta Main Basic tickets are also ineligible to earn MQDs. These exclusions mean that paying Delta for an add-on is not, by itself, a non-flying MQD strategy. Consult the SkyMiles Program Rules for the current list.
Some eligible award tickets can earn MQDs when booked through a direct Delta channel and in eligible fare products, calculated as miles redeemed divided by 100 and excluding government taxes and fees. That is an earning possibility for eligible travel, but it still requires taking a flight and therefore does not meet a strict no-flying goal.

How much status can non-flying MQDs cover?
Delta’s current Medallion overview lists these MQD thresholds:

These are the thresholds Delta lists on its Medallion Program Overview, reviewed for the 2026 qualification year; verify the live page for the year you are pursuing. For scale, one $2,500 Headstart deposit equals half of the listed Silver threshold, but whether a particular member receives it depends on card eligibility and the program terms.

When MQDs count, and when they post
Delta’s qualification year runs January 1 through December 31. MQDs earned during a qualification year determine status for the subsequent Medallion year; for example, activity during calendar 2026 qualifies toward the 2027 Medallion year. Delta says balances reset around January 1. Posting is not necessarily immediate: its rules allow up to 6–8 weeks after a qualifying flight is completed, while Delta Vacations terms describe posting up to eight weeks after eligible travel components are completed. Can you transfer or redeem MQDs?
No. Delta says MQDs have no cash value, cannot be transferred or gifted, and cannot be redeemed for award travel. They are qualification credit used to determine Medallion status, not a general-purpose currency. See Delta’s Medallion Program Overview.
