To find total utility (TU), add the marginal utility (MU) of each unit consumed: TUn = MU1 + MU2 + … + MUn. If you are given a total-utility table, read the value for the quantity in question. For one-unit intervals, marginal utility is the difference between consecutive totals: MUn = TUn − TUn−1.

Choose the calculation that matches the information you have

  • Marginal-utility schedule: add the marginal utility for every unit from the first through the requested unit.
  • Total-utility table: read the total shown for the requested quantity. To find the marginal utility of an additional unit, subtract the previous total from the new one.
  • Bundle of goods: add the listed utility values for the selected quantities only if the exercise defines bundle utility as their sum.

Start from any baseline the problem provides. Do not assume that a missing starting value is zero unless the exercise states or implies that convention. With one-unit steps, summing the marginal utilities and reading a complete total-utility table should give the same result.

Calculate total utility from marginal utility

Suppose the marginal utilities for four units are 12, 6, 4, and 2 utils. Add them to find total utility after four units:

TU4 = 12 + 6 + 4 + 2 = 24 utils.

This illustrative schedule appears in the NCERT chapter on consumer behaviour; the values are teaching examples, not measured statistics.

Read the change in total utility

Marginal utility is the change in total utility when consumption increases. In the same illustrative schedule, total utility for quantities one through six is 12, 18, 22, 24, 24, and 22 utils. The fifth unit adds zero utility, so the total stays at 24. The sixth has marginal utility of −2, bringing total utility down to 22.

  • Positive marginal utility raises total utility.
  • Zero marginal utility leaves total utility unchanged for that increment.
  • Negative marginal utility lowers total utility.
  • When marginal utility is decreasing but remains positive, total utility still rises, just by smaller amounts.

Find total utility for a bundle of goods

For a multi-good problem, follow the table’s stated method and use the quantities in the selected bundle. In a worked example in OpenStax’s 2023 Principles of Microeconomics 3e, three T-shirts are assigned 63 utils and two movies 31 utils; adding those values gives a bundle total of 94 utils. These are illustrative textbook values, not empirical measurements. See OpenStax’s section on consumption choices.

When the question asks which bundle is best, compare total utility across the affordable choices listed in the exercise. OpenStax’s example gives José a highest total utility of 103 utils for one T-shirt and six movies; that result applies to the example’s choice set, not to consumers generally.

Check your answer

  • Did you include marginal utility from the first unit through the requested quantity?
  • Did you use the stated baseline rather than assume one?
  • For a total-utility table, did you read the row or entry for the correct quantity?
  • For a bundle, does the exercise say to add the goods’ utility values?
  • Does the direction of the total’s change match the marginal utility’s sign?

“Utils” are illustrative units used in utility schedules; they should not be interpreted as a standardized physical measurement of satisfaction.
