For Sunderland, published accounts give a historical ownership split but do not establish the owners’ personal fortunes. Newcastle’s ownership is led by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), an institutional sovereign fund—not an individual whose personal net worth can be compared with a business owner’s.

Middlesbrough: Steve Gibson and Bulkhaul
The strongest public explanation of Steve Gibson’s wealth connects it to Bulkhaul, the bulk transport business. Companies House lists Gibson as a person with significant influence or control over Bulkhaul Limited and separately records him as a director of Middlesbrough Football and Athletic Company Limited. Those records establish a business connection and a club role, but they do not provide a simple personal ownership percentage in Bulkhaul.
ITV News Tyne Tees reported that the Sunday Times Rich List put Gibson’s fortune at £210 million in 2019, mostly tied to Bulkhaul. Companies House describes significant influence or control, not a precise share of Gibson’s personal wealth. The available record therefore supports the broad link between Gibson and Bulkhaul, but not a claim that a particular percentage of the company—or a particular current valuation—belongs to him. Sunderland: what the 2022 accounts do—and do not—tell us
Sunderland Limited’s audited accounts for the year ended 31 July 2022 recorded the following shareholdings:

Claims about inherited family wealth or a billionaire valuation should not be treated as established without separate, reliable evidence. Newcastle United: a fund-led investment group, not one person’s fortune
Newcastle United’s corporate information describes its owners as an investment group led by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund and RB Sports & Media. The club names Jamie Reuben as RB Sports & Media’s ultimate beneficial owner. When the takeover was completed in 2021, the announcement named PIF, PCP Capital Partners and RB Sports & Media as the investment group.
This structure matters when discussing wealth. PIF is a sovereign investment fund, so its institutional capital should not be presented as the personal wealth of an individual owner or placed in a personal net-worth ranking. The club’s current ownership description and the original acquisition announcement explain the group structure; neither makes the fund’s capital an individual’s fortune. In its 2021 statement on the takeover dispute, the Premier League said it had received legally binding assurances that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia would not control Newcastle United Football Club. That is the league’s description of the assurances it received at the time; it should not be expanded into an independent finding about the relationship between the Saudi state and PIF. - Sunderland’s shareholders: The available figures describe historical club shareholdings, not personal net worth or wealth origins.
- Newcastle’s PIF-led group: The club’s ownership includes an institutional sovereign fund, which is not an individual’s personal fortune.
These are different kinds of financial information: a reported estimate, company and directorship records, historical club accounts, and an institutional ownership structure. They cannot responsibly be combined into a single, current ranking of the three clubs’ owners by personal wealth.
