Federal Student Aid says, “If you can’t fill out the online FAFSA form, you can fill out a FAFSA PDF.” The PDF is an alternative to the online form, not a separate paid product.
Choose the award year by when you’ll attend school
The correct FAFSA is determined by the school attendance period—not the date you download the form. Federal Student Aid’s published dates are:
Rank #2
| FAFSA award year | Attendance period covered |
|---|---|
| 2026–27 | July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2027 |
| 2027–28 | July 1, 2027, through June 30, 2028 |
These dates come from Federal Student Aid’s FAFSA instructions and its 2026–27 FAFSA PDF. Available forms change by award year, so use the official instructions page to find the form for your attendance period.

The FAFSA PDF is the application. The FAFSA Submission Summary is a different document created after you submit the FAFSA and it is processed. The student can open it from the Dashboard of their StudentAid.gov account; a parent, spouse, or other contributor cannot access the student’s summary.
Rank #3
Federal Student Aid says most FAFSA forms are processed immediately, although some take one to three days. The summary contains an Eligibility Overview, FAFSA Form Answers, School Information, and Next Steps. Use it to review submitted answers, aid estimates, school information, and any indicated corrections or next steps. Estimates in the summary are not a final aid offer; the school’s financial aid office makes that offer after admission.
