30% is the commonly cited PlayStation Store commission benchmark, but Sony’s public materials do not confirm one universal current rate for every game, add-on, territory, or agreement. The figure appears in a court order describing a lawsuit allegation and in Epic’s general description of current-console fees—not in a public Sony rate card. The answer depends on what “Sony’s cut” means and which transaction is being discussed.
What does “Sony’s cut” usually mean?
Most people asking how much Sony takes mean the share of a digital purchase paid through PlayStation Store that goes to the platform rather than the game publisher. That is a different question from royalties negotiated in a developer-publisher contract, or from the mix of revenue Sony reports for its gaming business.

Sony defines digital software as full-game downloads of first- and third-party titles through PlayStation Store. Add-on content is other digital content sold through the Store, including in-game currency, items, and expansion packages. These definitions identify revenue categories; they do not disclose a commission rate for either category. Sony FY25 Q3 Supplemental Information
Is Sony’s PlayStation Store cut 30%?
Thirty percent is a widely cited benchmark, but the public evidence supports a narrower statement: it is a commonly cited PlayStation Store and current-console fee figure, not a publicly confirmed universal Sony rate for every transaction.

- Court order: In 2022, a federal court order recounted plaintiffs’ allegation that Sony took a 30% cut on 23 games sold on PlayStation Store. The order describes the allegation; it is not a judicial finding that Sony currently charges 30% on every sale. Caccuri v. Sony
- Epic’s documentation: Epic describes fees ranging from 12% on Epic Games Store to 30% on current consoles, and says its own calculation currently averages 26%. This is Epic’s cross-platform context, not a Sony-specific contract or rate schedule. Epic Fortnite in-island transactions overview
Sony’s current U.S. consumer Terms of Service address PlayStation services and user purchases but do not state a developer commission percentage. Sony’s public investor reporting likewise categorizes Store-related revenue without publishing a complete developer commission schedule.
Why Sony’s reported revenue percentages are not its commission
Sony’s FY2024 Game & Network Services sales mix was reported as follows in its Corporate Report 2025:
Rank #2

| Category | Share of segment sales to external customers |
|---|---|
| Hardware | 24% |
| Physical software | 3% |
| Digital software | 20% |
| Add-on content | 29% |
| Network services | 14% |
| Other | 10% |
These figures are the composition of Sony’s gaming segment sales, not the portion Sony retains from an individual game or add-on transaction. For example, the 29% shown for add-on content does not mean Sony keeps 29% of in-game purchases. Sony Corporate Report 2025, Game & Network Services

Platform commissions and contractual royalties are not interchangeable. A publicly filed PlayStation Global Developer and Publisher Agreement, effective March 23, 2017, states that for certain additional revenue received or credited to a publisher, the publisher must notify the applicable Sony Interactive Entertainment company and negotiate in good faith over any royalty, at a rate agreed by the parties. That clause applies to the specified additional revenue and should not be treated as the standard digital Store commission. SEC-filed PlayStation Global Developer and Publisher Agreement

So a percentage found in one contract or for one revenue stream cannot automatically be applied to every game sale, add-on, territory, or publisher. A complete current Sony schedule is not available in the public materials cited here.

What to compare when evaluating a platform fee
- Channel: A PlayStation Store digital purchase is not the same transaction as a physical retail sale.
- Product: A full-game download, add-on, in-game currency purchase, and other publisher revenue may fall under different categories or terms.
- Evidence: Distinguish a public contract clause from a lawsuit allegation, a cross-platform fee description, or a corporate revenue breakdown.
- Scope: Check the title, agreement, territory, transaction type, and time period before treating a percentage as broadly applicable.
