The parties settled in June 2023, but the settlement terms were not made public. The case’s legal outcome and Kesha’s personal finances are separate questions.
What really happened between Kesha and Dr. Luke?
Kesha and producer Lukasz Gottwald, known professionally as Dr. Luke, entered a six-album recording agreement in 2005, according to the New York Court of Appeals. In 2014, Kesha filed a lawsuit in California alleging sexual abuse and seeking to rescind her contracts and obtain damages. Gottwald filed a defamation case against her in New York the same day, alleging that her statements were false. These were allegations and party positions, not findings that a court made about whether an assault occurred.

What did the court decide, and what did the settlement disclose?
On June 13, 2023, the New York Court of Appeals ruled that Gottwald was a limited-purpose public figure for the litigation. As the majority put it, “We agree with the dissent below that Gottwald meets this standard and is a limited-purpose public figure.” That classification meant he had to prove actual malice for the relevant defamation claim. The opinion also addressed litigation privileges and how New York’s amended anti-SLAPP law applied to the pending case; it was not a trial verdict resolving the underlying allegations.
On June 22, 2023, the parties announced that they had settled before a trial. Contemporaneous reports from Reuters and the Los Angeles Times said the terms were not public. The announcement therefore does not establish a payment amount, a transfer of rights, or the precise contractual outcome.

Why the $5 million net-worth figure is unverified
The court opinion says Kesha’s first album sold over two million copies. That is an album-sales figure, not a measure of Kesha’s personal earnings or wealth. Sales do not reveal how much money an artist received after accounting for recording and distribution arrangements, expenses, taxes, or other financial obligations.
Net worth is generally a calculation of assets minus liabilities. Establishing a specific estimate would require reliable information about those financial components and a clear method. Neither the court opinion nor the cited settlement reports establishes a $5 million net worth, connects that figure to the lawsuit, or discloses settlement proceeds. The claim that the lawsuit left Kesha with $5 million should therefore be treated as unverified, not as a documented financial outcome.
