America’s Got Talent advertises a $1 million grand prize, but the winner is not necessarily handed $1 million in cash. According to terms AGT representatives provided to Good Housekeeping in 2025, the prize is payable as a financial annuity over 40 years, or the winner may choose the annuity’s present cash value. Divided evenly, the $1 million annuity works out to $25,000 a year before taxes.

What does the AGT winner actually receive?

The advertised grand prize is $1,000,000, according to the America’s Got Talent Auditions website. The payment terms reported by Good Housekeeping are more specific: AGT representatives told the publication in 2025 that the prize is payable in a financial annuity over 40 years, or the contestant may elect to receive the present cash value of that annuity.

Those are different payment choices. The advertised figure is the stated prize total; it does not mean the winner automatically receives a $1 million check at once.

How does the 40-year annuity work?

If the $1 million total is divided evenly across 40 years, that is $25,000 per year before taxes. Good Housekeeping reports the same annual illustration. It is a simple division of the stated total, not an after-tax estimate or a guarantee of a particular payment schedule beyond the reported 40-year term.

Can the winner take a lump sum instead?

The reported alternative is the “present cash value” of the annuity. That means the winner may choose a cash-value option rather than receive the stated total through payments over time. The current amount of that option is not given in the cited terms, so the $1 million headline should not be treated as the guaranteed immediate cash payout.

Good Housekeeping also mentions an older estimate from a 2016 Forbes analysis. It is a historical outside estimate, not a current official cash-option figure, and should not be used to predict what a particular winner receives.

How much is left after taxes?

There is no universal take-home amount established by the cited sources. The $25,000 annual figure is before taxes, and the sources do not calculate a winner-specific tax bill. Any net amount would depend on the winner’s circumstances and how the prize is paid; neither the headline prize nor the annual illustration is an after-tax figure.
