SEO does not have a standard price: a one-time audit, ongoing technical work, and a monthly content program are different services. As useful—but not interchangeable—benchmarks, Ahrefs’ 2024 survey of 439 providers found an average retainer of $2,917 per month, while Backlinko’s 2025 survey of more than 300 SEO professionals reported an average monthly range of $1,000–$2,500. Your quote depends on the work, website, market, provider, and what the fee includes.

What do published SEO pricing surveys say?

Survey figures are reference points, not a guaranteed rate or a quote for your business. The surveys use different samples and methods, so their results should be read separately rather than averaged together.

Source and survey Published pricing reference How to read it
Ahrefs, updated August 15, 2024; 439 SEO service providers Average retainer: $2,917 per month; average hourly rate: $111; most common one-off project fee: $2,501–$5,000, reported by 21.2% of respondents. Ahrefs also found that 78.2% of providers charged monthly retainers. Its agency retainer average was $3,209 per month and freelancer average was $1,348.63; these averages were estimated from pricing-band responses using each band’s upper end. Ahrefs’ pricing survey.
Backlinko, 2025 survey reported in its guide updated December 29, 2025; more than 300 SEO professionals Average monthly SEO cost: $1,000–$2,500; hourly services: $50–$100; projects generally: $1,000–$5,000. These are Backlinko’s reported survey figures, not a reconciliation of Ahrefs’ results. Backlinko’s SEO pricing guide.
SE Ranking, 2025 agency pricing survey; 260 responses 64% of surveyed agencies charged below $1,000 monthly; 45% reported hourly fees of $50–$100; about 66% charged $500–$2,000 per project. These describe survey respondents, not the whole market. SE Ranking cautions that the sample may be too small for statistical significance. It found 53% preferred retainers and 80% included retainers among their preferred models. SE Ranking’s agency pricing survey.
WebFX published guide; publication year not established in the consulted guide Published ranges: $1,500–$7,500 monthly, $100–$150 hourly, and $5,000–$35,000 per project. These are WebFX guide ranges, not a dated survey-wide or current market average. The guide also lists $55,000–$75,000 per in-house team member, without a publication date established in the consulted excerpt. WebFX’s SEO pricing guide.

Ahrefs reported an average of $1,557 per month for local SEO. That figure is a survey benchmark, not a fixed price for every local campaign. Ahrefs’ pricing survey.

Why can SEO quotes differ so much?

Scope and deliverables

A short consultation or audit is not equivalent to sustained technical implementation, content production, or link acquisition. A provider may offer some combination of audit work, reporting, and on-page, off-page, or technical optimization. Ask what tasks and outputs the fee covers, rather than treating “SEO” as one standardized product. Backlinko’s SEO pricing guide and WebFX’s pricing guide describe different service elements and tiers.

Website condition, size, and business goals

A large site, complex technical issues, or a need for extensive strategy can require more work than a small site with a narrow, well-defined need. Clarify whether the provider is diagnosing issues, making changes, producing content, or only recommending work for your team to implement.

Competition and target market

Competitive industries and broader target markets can call for more research and sustained effort. A quote should explain the market and goals it is designed for, not just list a monthly fee.

Provider type and location

Agency, freelancer, and consultant pricing distributions differ in the Ahrefs survey. Ahrefs also reported higher average charges among providers serving worldwide markets than those serving local markets. SE Ranking found higher rates more common among North American than European agencies. Treat these as directional survey findings: provider samples and service scopes may not match. Ahrefs and SE Ranking.

Bundled work and third-party expenses

SE Ranking reported that 85% of surveyed respondents bundled services into packages. A package price may therefore include a different mix of work than another provider’s fee. Check whether content, implementation, link acquisition, analytics, reporting, and any third-party costs are included or billed separately. SE Ranking’s survey.

Which SEO pricing model fits the work?

Model Often fits Published reference points What to compare
Monthly retainer Ongoing optimization, monitoring, and implementation. Ahrefs: $2,917 average monthly retainer; its most common reported band was $501–$1,000, selected by 20.4% of providers. Backlinko: $1,000–$2,500 average monthly cost range. Monthly deliverables, capacity or hours, who implements changes, content and link costs, reporting, and cancellation terms.
Hourly A bounded consultation, troubleshooting session, or specialist task. Ahrefs: $111 average; the most common hourly band was $75–$100. Backlinko: $50–$100 average service range. Rate, estimated hours, approval for overages, work product, and who carries out recommendations.
Fixed project A clearly defined audit, migration review, or one-off initiative. Ahrefs: the most common fee was $2,501–$5,000, reported by 21.2% of respondents. Backlinko: projects generally $1,000–$5,000. Scope boundaries, milestones, acceptance criteria, exclusions, and post-project support.
In-house Work that needs direct internal ownership and coordination. WebFX lists $55,000–$75,000 per team member; its guide’s publication date was not established in the consulted excerpt, so this is not a current salary quote. Role and seniority, benefits and overhead, management, tools, and recruitment costs.

Survey figures in this table are from Ahrefs and Backlinko; the in-house figure is from WebFX. Each is tied to the publisher’s own survey or guide, not a single standardized price list.

How should you compare proposals before committing?

  1. Write down the business outcome and scope. State the site, target market, priorities, and whether you want diagnosis, implementation, content, or ongoing work.
  2. Ask for itemized deliverables. Request clarity on technical changes, content writing and production, link acquisition, analytics setup, reporting, and implementation ownership.
  3. Make providers price the same time horizon. Compare two or three proposals against the same scope, duration, and assumptions; otherwise, a lower fee may simply cover less work.
  4. Confirm exclusions and responsibilities. Ask which third-party expenses are extra, what your team must provide, and what would trigger a change in scope.
  5. Agree on measurement and terms. Ask which metrics will be reported, how often, what milestones or outputs are expected, and what the cancellation terms are.

Be cautious of a proposal that promises a specific ranking instead of defining work and measurement. The pricing guides describe different service tiers, but the cited benchmarks do not establish that a higher fee guarantees better results. Backlinko, Ahrefs, and WebFX.

What the published prices can—and cannot—tell you

These numbers are survey snapshots and vendor-published ranges, not audited transaction data or a business-specific estimate. The Ahrefs results were updated in 2024; Backlinko reports a 2025 survey in a guide updated in December 2025; SE Ranking’s 2025 survey warns about sample size; and the consulted WebFX excerpt does not establish a publication date. Google’s SEO Starter Guide explains SEO fundamentals but does not set or endorse service fees. Google’s SEO Starter Guide.

To estimate a realistic budget for your business, a provider needs details such as your geography, website size and condition, goals, competition, and required work. Until those are defined, use published prices to frame questions—not as a promise of what your project should cost.
