There is no reliable single price for a used PS4 controller: condition, proof it works, seller protections, shipping and availability all matter. The available examples below are individual listings and sales from different dates—not a representative market average. In particular, later examples should not be mistaken for 2024 prices.
What do used PS4 controllers cost?
The observed prices are not directly comparable: they cover different years, conditions and types of transaction. A completed sale, a retailer’s refurbished listing and a seller’s asking price each tell you something different.

PriceCharting’s individual sale records are available on its black DualShock 4 price page. The retailer and marketplace listings are Best Buy’s refurbished DualShock 4 page and the Poshmark CUH-ZCT2U listing.
These examples do not support a dependable national average for 2024. If you are deciding what to pay now, compare active listings for the same model and condition, and judge the total delivered cost and protections rather than treating any one figure above as a standard.

What should you check before buying?
A clean shell is not proof that a controller works. Ask what the seller actually tested, and inspect or test each function yourself when possible. No universal grading standard is established by the cited listings, so clarify what “tested” means.
- Sticks: Check that both analog sticks move smoothly and return to center. Look for drift or dead zones during gameplay or a controller input test.
- Buttons and triggers: Confirm the face buttons, D-pad, shoulder buttons and triggers respond consistently.
- Charging and battery: Connect a cable and confirm charging. If possible, use the controller long enough to assess whether it holds charge.
- USB port and wireless connection: Check that the port is not loose or damaged, and confirm the controller connects wirelessly after pairing.
- Condition and bundle: Note cosmetic wear and whether a cable or other accessories are included. Do not assume an included cable is suitable for pairing unless it supports data.
- Returns and warranty: Read the seller’s return window and any refurb warranty terms. These protections vary, and they affect the value of an otherwise similar listing.
- Total cost: Add shipping and any other charges to the asking price before comparing offers.
Pairing it with a PS4
Sony says the controller must be paired with a PS4 the first time it is used or when it is moved to another PS4. Turn on the console and connect the controller with a USB cable to complete pairing. See Sony Interactive Entertainment’s DUALSHOCK 4 CUH-ZCT2G instructions. A cable that only supplies power may not complete data-dependent pairing.

Account for battery age
Sony warns that battery duration decreases with repeated use and age, and also varies with storage, use and environmental conditions. This makes battery performance a meaningful risk on a used controller even when its exterior looks good. Sony’s guidance appears in its DUALSHOCK 4 CUH-ZCT2G safety and battery information. The manual lists a built-in 1000 mAh lithium-ion battery for CUH-ZCT2G specifically; do not assume that specification applies to every DualShock 4 model. Sony also recommends fully charging a controller at least once a year if it has been unused for an extended period.

Set the price by comparing recent listings and completed sales for the same model and comparable condition, while keeping asking prices separate from actual sale prices. Disclose the information a buyer needs to judge the risk.

- State the model number and whether the controller is original Sony hardware.
- Describe cosmetic wear and photograph it clearly.
- Say which sticks, buttons, triggers, charging, battery and wireless functions you checked.
- Disclose known faults; label an untested or parts-only controller accurately.
- List included cables or accessories, shipping cost and applicable return terms.
Only describe a controller as free of drift, fully working or holding charge if you have checked those things. A clear, specific condition description helps buyers compare your listing with tested, untested and refurbished alternatives without implying that they are equivalent.
