There is no current per-aircraft MH-60R Seahawk price in the Navy budget material reviewed. The clearest Navy unit-cost figures are historic: the Department of the Navy’s FY2020 budget book listed a flyaway unit cost of $34.237 million for prior years and $49.375 million for FY2018. Those are different accounting periods, not today’s price for one helicopter.
What the Navy’s historic unit-cost figures mean
The Department of the Navy’s March 2019 FY2020 budget justification book reports two cost measures. “Flyaway unit cost” refers to the aircraft as procured in flyable condition; “gross weapon-system unit cost” is a broader measure. The figures are budget-book entries, not current quotes or consumer prices.
| Budget period in the FY2020 book | Flyaway unit cost | Gross weapon-system unit cost |
|---|---|---|
| Prior years | $34,236,996 | $39,698,396 |
| FY2018 | $49,375,000 | $50,000,000 |
Source for all four values: Department of the Navy, FY2020 budget justification book, March 2019. The “prior years” figures are presented as that budget book labels them; they are not a single identified procurement-year price. The flyaway and gross weapon-system amounts differ because the measures do not describe the same cost basis.
Does the latest Navy budget provide a current price?
No. The Department of the Navy’s March 2024 FY2025 budget book lists $108.072 million for the MH-60 Series modification line in FY2025, but the line is for modifications and leaves flyaway and gross weapon-system unit-cost fields blank. It does not establish what a newly procured MH-60R costs per aircraft. See the FY2025 MH-60 Series budget line.

Why the $10 billion figure is not a helicopter price
In an April 5, 2006 announcement, Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) said the Navy planned to buy 254 MH-60R aircraft and estimated total acquisition costs at approximately $10 billion over the program’s life. NAVAIR said the estimate included the aircraft and government-furnished equipment, including ground-maintenance equipment and training materials. It is a dated whole-program estimate, not a per-helicopter amount. The announcement also described mission systems and integration as being procured through a separate multi-year Lockheed Martin Systems Integration contract. See NAVAIR’s 2006 announcement and its description of mission-system procurement.
Why older DSCA reference values are not comparable prices
A Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) equipment schedule gives an airframe-only reference value of $329,690 dated September 23, 2010, and a fly-away reference value of $2,492,763 dated August 5, 2011. The schedule describes the latter as including minimum and mission avionics and two T-700-GE-401C engines. These are old, differently scoped reference values—not current Navy unit-cost figures—and should not be substituted for the Navy’s budget entries. The dates and included equipment are essential context when reading the DSCA equipment schedule.

What the MH-60R is
NAVAIR identifies the MH-60R as the U.S. Navy’s primary anti-submarine and surface-warfare helicopter. Its listed missions also include electronic warfare, command and control, and non-combat operations; secondary missions include search and rescue, logistics, medical evacuation, and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance. NAVAIR names Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation and Lockheed Martin Systems as contractors and describes the aircraft as in production. Its product page currently lists an inventory of 270, without giving a publication date for that figure. See NAVAIR’s MH-60R product page.
