How Much Do Alaska Fishing Boats Pay? Deckhand Pay Explained

Alaska commercial fishing deckhands often earn a contract-defined share of proceeds, not a standard salary. Here’s what determines take-home pay and what to check before signing.

Alaska commercial fishing boats do not have one standard deckhand salary. Many crew members are paid a share of catch proceeds under a written agreement; some jobs may offer a daily rate. What a deckhand takes home depends on the fishery, catch and prices, season length, contract terms, and any agreed deductions. Alaska does not publish a current, representative pay range for commercial fishing deckhands, so a single “typical” salary would be misleading.

How Alaska fishing boat pay works

For commercial fishing deckhands, the key question is often not “What is the salary?” but “How is my share calculated?” A crewshare is a contract-defined portion of catch or fishery earnings. It is not necessarily a percentage of the fish’s gross market value: the agreement may specify an adjusted proceeds base, deductions, and how later price changes are handled.

Some vessels may instead offer a daily rate. Do not treat that as equivalent to a crewshare without comparing the season length, guaranteed days, and what happens when the vessel is not fishing. The Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development (DOL) says pay when fishing does not occur depends on the contract and circumstances.

The state’s 2010 article reported historical newcomer shares of 1.5% to 10% of adjusted gross catch and some daily rates of $50 to $100. Those figures describe conditions reported in 2010, not current Alaska pay, and should not be used to estimate a 2026 offer. The state sources reviewed do not establish a current typical range by fishery.

Why there is no dependable annual figure

Seasonal catch-share earnings can change with the fishery, the amount caught, fish prices, and how long a boat operates. A strong-season story is not a reliable forecast: Alaska DOL cautions that successful outcomes are not universal and urges applicants to examine offers carefully. Crew may also face deductions that reduce proceeds, while days without fishing may not generate pay unless the contract provides for it.

Employment figures describe jobs, not what an individual crew member earns. Alaska Economic Trends reported that seafood-harvesting employment fell by 443 jobs, or 7.6%, in 2024—the lowest count since data collection began in 2001. Salmon accounted for 53% of harvesting employment that year. These figures offer industry context, not a wage estimate for a particular boat or worker.

Do Alaska fishing deckhands get minimum wage or overtime?

Alaska DOL’s August 2025 wage guide says fishing deckhands do not have to receive minimum wage or overtime while working as fishing deckhands. It also explains that, in many cases, deckhands are treated as joint partners in the fishing venture rather than employees. This is a general description, not a legal ruling about any particular worker or job.

Do not apply that rule to every job performed aboard a fishing vessel. Commercial fishing deckhands, employees working in fish processing, and deckhands on floating processors can fall under different rules. Classification and work location matter; a worker with a specific pay or classification dispute can contact Alaska Wage and Hour.

Alaska’s general minimum wage is scheduled to rise to $14 per hour on July 1, 2026, and $15 per hour on July 1, 2027, with inflation adjustments beginning in 2028. Those general rates do not, by themselves, resolve whether a particular fishing job is covered by minimum-wage requirements. Check the applicable classification and current state rules before relying on them for an offer.

What to check in a written offer

Alaska DOL says state and federal law require a written contract between fishing deckhands and the company or skipper before the boat goes out to fish. Get and review it before traveling or departing. Make sure it answers these questions:

  • Deductions and expenses: Can food, fuel, bait, ice, company-store charges, or other costs be deducted from crew pay? Ask for examples in writing. The state guide says deductions such as food, gas, or store charges may be made if the deckhand agreed, preferably in writing.
  • Season and missed fishing: How long is the expected season? What happens if the fishery closes, the skipper does not fish, or the boat stops operating? Is any pay guaranteed in those circumstances?
  • Settlement and adjustments: When will the crew be paid? How are later price changes or retroactive payments handled?
  • Travel and gear: Who pays for travel to and from the vessel, and what does the agreement say about repayment if employment ends? Who supplies protective and required safety equipment?
  • Work conditions and vacancy: What hours and physical tasks are expected, what training is required, and why is the position open? DOL advises applicants to investigate a vessel with numerous openings during harvest season.

Compare like with like

A crewshare from one season cannot be compared directly with an annual hourly salary unless the pay basis, period, expenses, and job classification are made clear. Hourly postings for public-sector or marine-operations deckhands are not representative of commercial crew paid through a catch share. A salary aggregator’s small set of public-sector postings likewise cannot establish commercial fishing pay.

Alaska DOL says applicants should be prepared for long hours, heavy work, remote settings, wet and cold conditions, teamwork, and safety rules. Its free seafood-industry job information can help applicants understand the work and look for openings. Applicants generally apply directly to the boat or company; Alaska DOL can provide information about openings.
