Klarna is a digital payment provider that offers several ways to pay; its U.S. Pay in 4 option splits an eligible purchase into four installments. If approved, you pay the first installment when the order ships, then Klarna automatically charges the remaining three every 14 days. That schedule and the fees below apply specifically to U.S. Pay in 4—not every Klarna product or country.

What is Klarna?

Klarna is a digital payment provider shoppers may be able to select at participating online checkouts. Buy now, pay later (BNPL) is one of its payment options, not the only one. Klarna’s U.S. page also lists paying in full, paying in 30 days, and monthly financing. What you can use depends on what Klarna and the retailer offer at checkout.

These options differ in payment timing, fees, and credit terms. Klarna says some choices are credit-based and may require a Social Security number and a linked payment source. Monthly financing terms vary by product; the U.S. page describes terms of 6–24 months, which should not be treated as a universal range. Check the specific plan’s terms before choosing it. How does U.S. Klarna Pay in 4 work?

  1. Choose Klarna at checkout. Select Pay in 4 if it is offered for the purchase. Klarna makes an approval decision for that purchase attempt; choosing the option does not guarantee approval.
  2. Pay the first installment when the order ships. Klarna says it can collect payments from a credit card, debit card, or bank account.
  3. Pay the remaining installments automatically. Klarna says, “The next three payments are automatically charged every 14 days.” Make sure the payment method will have enough funds on each due date.

The installment schedule is for the U.S. Pay in 4 option. Pay in 30 days, paying in full, and monthly financing have different terms and payment schedules. Klarna’s U.S. Pay in 4 page

Does Klarna charge interest or late fees?

Klarna advertises U.S. Pay in 4 as interest-free, with no fees when payments are made on time. If Klarna cannot collect a payment, it says it will try again. After a second unsuccessful collection attempt, a late fee of up to $7 may be added to the missed amount, which may then be added to the next payment. Aggregate late fees are capped at 25% of the order value. This is not a fee that Klarna says applies automatically to every late payment. Klarna’s U.S. Pay in 4 page

Do not assume those cost terms apply to other Klarna services. Klarna’s page says its one-time card has a service fee, and monthly financing is issued by WebBank. Review the terms displayed for the particular option you are considering.

Does Klarna approval affect your credit score?

Klarna says its approval decisions are automated and based on current customer information, primarily information shared by credit bureaus. It makes a new decision for each purchase attempt, regardless of whether you were approved or declined before. Klarna says a rejection does not negatively affect your credit score. These statements describe Klarna’s process; approval is not guaranteed by a past approval. Klarna’s approval information

Credit checks and reporting can differ by BNPL product and lender. The CFPB says most BNPL lenders generally do not report ordinary payment history to major credit bureaus, but an unpaid debt sent to collections may be reported. The agency also notes that longer-term installment loans may involve hard inquiries and payment-history reporting. Those are general observations about BNPL, not a guarantee about every Klarna plan. What happens if you miss a payment?

Depending on the plan and its terms, a missed payment may mean fees, blocked future purchases, collection activity, or potential credit reporting if the debt reaches a collector. BNPL remains an obligation to repay even when an installment is interest-free. Before confirming a purchase, check the due dates and make sure they fit your available budget. How common is buy now, pay later?

In a report published January 13, 2025, the CFPB found that 21% of consumers with a credit record had used BNPL from at least one of six studied firms in 2022. Klarna was among those firms, so the figure describes combined use across the group—not Klarna’s individual user rate. CFPB 2025 BNPL report
