Sophia Learning is a subscription service for self-paced online courses. You can try limited course material for free, then subscribe to work through courses and request a transcript. Whether a completed course earns credit toward your degree is up to the college receiving the transcript, so confirm the exact course and degree fit with your school before paying.
How Sophia Learning works
Sophia offers online, asynchronous courses through a membership rather than charging a separate fee for each course. Sophia’s Plans and Pricing page says, “There are no formal lectures or deadlines for assignments.” You choose courses from its catalog, complete the assessments at your own pace, and can request a transcript after finishing. Sophia describes its catalog as containing more than 80 on-demand courses. See Sophia’s course catalog.
1. Sample a course for free
Sophia offers a free trial without requiring a credit card. The trial provides introductory course material and the first Challenge. If you later become a member, work completed during the trial is saved. Check the trial terms on Sophia’s site before starting.
2. Choose a membership plan
A membership provides access to the course catalog without a separate course fee. Sophia says members can have up to two courses active at once. Textbooks and course materials are described as included. The number of active courses is a limit on concurrent work, not a promise that you can complete every course within a particular timeframe.

3. Complete course assessments
Courses are self-paced and use a combination of assessment types. Sophia describes Challenges and Milestones, and some courses also include Touchstones, such as written assignments or projects. Its stated completion threshold is an overall score of at least 70%, subject to the assessments applicable to the course. Review the course details to understand its specific work and requirements.
4. Request a transcript and confirm its use
After completing a course, you can request a Sophia transcript. A completed course or transcript does not itself guarantee that a college will award credit or apply it to your degree. Before subscribing, look up your school using Sophia’s transfer-credit information and confirm the exact course with your college’s advisor or registrar.

How much does a Sophia course cost?
Sophia charges for membership, not course by course. Its public plans page lists these prices as of October 8, 2026; prices exclude applicable sales tax and plans automatically renew. Verify the current offer and renewal terms before signing up.
| Plan | Price listed by Sophia | Billing period |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly | $99 | One month; automatically renews |
| Four months | $299 | Four months; automatically renews |
| Twelve months | $799 | Twelve months; automatically renews |
These totals make the longer plans less expensive per month if you use the full membership period, but they require a larger upfront commitment. Your practical cost also depends on how many courses you can complete, whether they fit your degree, and whether your college accepts them. Sophia’s savings calculator says its estimates depend on course pace, membership plan, and your actual college costs; treat any savings figure as an estimate, not a guaranteed result.

Will Sophia credits transfer to your college?
Possibly, but transfer is determined by the receiving institution and can vary by course, program, and degree. Sophia reports more than 115 partner colleges and says nearly 3,000 institutions have reviewed Sophia transcripts. These are different measures: a partnership may offer a clearer pathway, while transcript review does not mean that every course is accepted or applied to every degree. Check Sophia’s transfer information, then verify your own school’s current policy.
Sophia also says ACE has evaluated and recommended credit for over 80 courses. An ACE recommendation is not a promise that a college will award credit. Ask your institution whether it accepts the specific course, what credit amount and score or grade requirements apply, whether residency rules affect it, and whether the credit counts toward your intended major or other degree requirements. An institution-specific chart, such as the one Sophia provides for American College of Education, is a starting point rather than a universal guarantee.

Is Sophia Learning a good fit?
Sophia may be worth considering if your school confirms that particular courses will satisfy requirements you need, and the self-paced assessment format suits you. Compare the options on the factors that determine your actual value:
- Verified degree applicability: Confirm course equivalency and whether the credit counts toward your program before enrolling.
- Membership cost and timing: Match the plan and renewal period to a realistic course pace; account for automatic renewal.
- Course fit: Check that the courses you need are available and that the assessment format works for you.
- Credit conditions: Ask about credit amount, minimum score or grade, transfer limits, and residency requirements.
Do not base the decision solely on Sophia’s overall partner count, transcript-review figure, or ACE recommendations. Those figures describe reach or evaluation, not the outcome for your school and degree.
