Sonja Morgan’s reported financial crisis centered on a failed film project that resulted in a $7 million judgment. She filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2010; CBS News reported that her petition listed $19.8 million in debt and $13.5 million in assets. Morgan later said she completed reorganization and paid creditors in full, while Bravo described her pursuing stage work, fashion and shoe lines, and townhouse rental. Those reported milestones do not establish her current net worth.

What led to Sonja Morgan’s financial crisis?

A film project and a $7 million judgment

CBS News reported that Morgan’s production company, Sonja Productions, was involved with Hannibal Pictures in a proposed film, Fast Flash to Bang Time, which was expected to star John Travolta. According to CBS, the project did not get off the ground because Sonja Productions did not meet conditions set for Travolta’s participation. Hannibal Pictures sued and won a reported $7 million judgment. CBS News reported on the case; TheWrap reported that the judgment was upheld by the U.S. Court of Appeals in 2011.

Morgan said other complications were involved

In a 2011 post published by Bravo, Morgan described facing the judgment over “a film that was never made.” She said her lawyers advised filing Chapter 11 to protect assets, and added: “I have a lot of outstanding business, my assets tied up in divorce, and needed some time to sort it out.” That is Morgan’s account of the circumstances, not an independently verified explanation of every factor in her finances. What did her bankruptcy filing say?

CBS News reported on November 18, 2010, that Morgan filed for Chapter 11 and that her petition listed $19.8 million in debt and $13.5 million in assets. Those are figures reported from the petition at the time of filing—not a later audited estimate of her net worth. They also should not be confused with the separate $7 million judgment tied to the film dispute. CBS News’ 2010 report.

What happened to her French villa?

TheWrap reported that Morgan’s bankruptcy trustee sold her French villa in 2014 for $5.7 million. The report said the sale was below the property’s listed range of $7 million to $8 million and that court documents indicated the trustee conducted the sale. TheWrap’s report on the sale.

How did the Chapter 11 case end?

E! News reported in 2015 that the case had ended and quoted Morgan saying the total came to more than $9 million: the $7 million judgment plus roughly $2 million in administration fees. That reported resolution amount is distinct from both the debt and asset figures listed in the 2010 petition. E! News’ 2015 report.

How did Morgan say she bounced back?

In a 2019 Bravo report, Morgan said she was out of Chapter 11 reorganization and had paid “100 percent on the dollar.” Bravo also described her pursuing stage performance, fashion and shoe lines, and renting out her Upper East Side townhouse. These are reported signs of work and business activity after the case; the article does not quantify what those activities earned. Bravo’s 2019 report.

What is known about her finances now?

The reported completion of a bankruptcy reorganization by 2019 is not proof of Morgan’s financial condition in 2026. The sources cited here do not verify her current net worth, income, debts, or assets, so online estimates should not be treated as established fact.
