A practical plan combines suitable tools, limits how much production is committed, and is revisited as yields, local basis, bids, and liquidity change. No tool removes every risk: price exposure interacts with yield, quality, basis, delivery obligations, and the ability to meet cash calls or fulfill a contract.
This guidance is primarily U.S.-focused and is educational, not individualized financial, crop-insurance, or legal advice.
Start with the farm’s exposure and cash needs
Before choosing a marketing tool, map what the farm may have to sell and when. USDA ERS notes that farms differ in their risk exposure and in their willingness and ability to bear risk, so the right mix is operation-specific.
- Estimate production by crop or livestock product, accounting for yield uncertainty.
- Identify likely sale windows, available storage, delivery capacity, and quality or grade requirements.
- List debt payments, operating expenses, household cash needs, and other dates when cash must be available.
- Set target prices or revenue floors, then decide what share of expected production could be committed without creating an unacceptable shortfall if output is lower than expected.
A plan should protect the farm’s ability to operate as well as its hoped-for selling price. A commitment that looks attractive on paper can create trouble if there is not enough marketable production, cash to meet margin calls, or capacity to deliver on time. USDA ERS discusses the range of farm risk-management strategies at Risk Management Strategies.

Choose tools for the risks they address
Marketing contracts, futures, options, crop insurance, and broader financial measures do different jobs. Compare each option by the protection it offers, upside retained, cash required, delivery and quality commitments, basis exposure, counterparty or execution risk, and ability to exit or adjust.
Forward or marketing contracts
A contract with a buyer can establish a price or price formula and specify quantity, quality, timing, and other exchange terms. Depending on the agreement, it may also secure a buyer outlet or delivery window. In exchange, the producer is responsible for meeting the contract conditions. Read the quantity, specifications, delivery period, pricing method, and default provisions before committing; do not assume a contract protects against a production shortfall.

Futures
Futures are standardized exchange-traded contracts that can hedge adverse market-price movements. They require margin and can create ongoing cash-flow demands as prices move. A futures position does not set the farm’s local cash price: local basis, grade, location, and timing can differ from the futures market. A hedge therefore leaves basis exposure and does not itself arrange physical delivery to a buyer.
Options
An option buyer pays a premium for the right, but not the obligation, to take a position at specified terms. Options can provide protection against an adverse futures-price move while retaining potential benefit if prices move favorably; the premium is the cost of that flexibility. An option that is no longer useful can expire, but the premium paid is not recovered.

Crop revenue insurance
Crop insurance can be one layer of risk management, not a promised sale price or a substitute for a marketing plan. USDA’s Risk Management Agency describes Revenue Protection and Whole-Farm Revenue Protection as distinct plans. Revenue Protection addresses qualifying yield and revenue losses under policy terms; Whole-Farm Revenue Protection covers farm commodities under one policy, subject to program limits and eligibility. Check current policy documents, deadlines, and availability for the crop and county with RMA or an authorized crop-insurance professional. See RMA’s Insurance Plans.
On-farm and financial measures
Diversifying production or income, using storage, maintaining savings or liquidity, and relying on off-farm income may complement market tools. Their value depends on storage and financing costs, operational capacity, and household circumstances. Storage, for example, can change when a crop is sold but does not guarantee a better net price.

Turn the choices into rules the farm can follow
A useful plan states in advance what the farm intends to do and who can act. The following are practical planning elements, not a federal prescription:
- Define sale windows and triggers. Record the periods or price conditions that would prompt a sale or hedge, and how those choices relate to expected production and cash needs.
- Set a maximum committed share. Choose a limit for contracted or hedged production that accounts for yield uncertainty, quality, and delivery capacity. Avoid committing all expected production before those risks are considered.
- Plan for cash requirements. Identify how the operation would fund option premiums, futures margin, and other cash demands without jeopardizing operating expenses or debt payments.
- Assign decision authority. Specify who is allowed to place trades or sign contracts, and what records must be kept for quantities, prices, terms, and delivery obligations.
- Set review triggers. Revisit commitments when production estimates, local bids or basis, storage availability, quality prospects, or cash needs change.
USDA ERS describes how marketing contracts, futures, and options differ in cost, flexibility, counterparty-default risk, and ease of closing out a position. Its 2020 report, based on 2016 data, found nearly 50,000 U.S. farms used futures or options; more than 90 percent of those contracts were for corn or soybeans. Those historical figures describe past use, not current participation or a recommendation for a particular farm. The report is Corn and Soybean Farmers Combine Futures, Options, and Marketing Contracts To Manage Financial Risks.

Use crop-year insurance prices in the right context
RMA’s September 15, 2026 bulletin says that 2026 crop-year harvest prices and 2027 crop-year projected prices and volatility factors were approved using a discovery period of August 15 through September 14, 2026. These are crop-insurance policy inputs, not current cash bids or a universal selling price. Confirm the crop, policy, county, and relevant dates before applying a figure. The bulletin and its stated resources are available at PM-26-056.
What the historical evidence can—and cannot—show
USDA ERS’s report Risk Management Practices on U.S. Farms and Ranches, 1996–2020, published April 16, 2026, uses ARMS data covering 1996–2020. Its historical scope can inform understanding of past risk-management practices, but it does not establish which strategy will perform best for a farm in 2026. Current decisions still depend on the operation’s specific production, contracts, cash position, and applicable policy terms.
