No official figures cited here show Honda’s overall vehicle sales falling 50%. The headline’s percentage cannot be verified from the available company disclosures. Honda Motor Co.’s March 2026 announcement concerned a sharply revised profit forecast and potential losses tied to its EV strategy—not a 50% drop in unit sales. Separately, American Honda reported that its U.S. sales rose in the first half of 2026.
Where did the 50% sales claim come from?
The cited official announcements do not establish a 50% decline in Honda’s global sales, sales of a particular model, or sales over a named period. Without a source that identifies the measure, market and comparison, the figure should not be treated as a verified company-wide sales result.
One likely source of confusion is that Honda announced a major financial setback in March 2026. But revenue, profit, estimated losses and vehicle sales are different measures. Honda’s announcement was about its earnings outlook and the cost of reassessing its electrification strategy.
What Honda reported about U.S. sales
American Honda Motor Co., Inc. reported 756,920 U.S. vehicle sales in the first half of 2026, up 2.4% year over year. Honda-brand sales were 687,205, up 2.5%. These are company-reported U.S. results; they do not establish global sales performance.

The U.S. model figures also show growth in some areas: Honda reported more than 226,114 CR-V sales in the first half of 2026, up 6%, with hybrid versions accounting for 55% of CR-V sales. It reported 213,513 hybrid-model sales across its lineup in that period. Those results describe U.S. sales, not demand in every market.
Why did Honda warn of large losses if U.S. sales were up?
Honda Motor Co., Ltd.’s March 12, 2026 announcement revised its operating-profit forecast for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2026. The company had previously forecast ¥550.0 billion in operating profit; it revised the forecast to a range of operating losses from ¥570.0 billion to ¥270.0 billion. Honda also estimated total losses of up to ¥2.5 trillion associated with reassessing its automobile electrification strategy, including potential additional losses in the next fiscal year or later. The company described the estimate as subject to risks and uncertainties. This is a loss estimate, not a measure of vehicle sales.

These are Honda’s explanations for its business outlook, not independent findings about the causes of the company’s financial results.
EV plans Honda changed
Honda said it would cancel development and launch of the Honda 0 SUV, Honda 0 Saloon and Acura RSX planned for North American production. It said the current business environment and declining EV demand made producing and selling those vehicles likely to create further long-term losses. The announcement described a reassessment of resource allocation and a stronger focus on hybrids; it did not say the three vehicles were already on sale or that Honda was abandoning all EVs.

Does the data prove “huge demand” for Honda vehicles?
No single demand measure in these releases supports that broad claim. Sales results show how many vehicles American Honda reported selling in a particular market and period; they are not, by themselves, an independent measure of customer demand or a global picture.
On July 1, 2026, Lance Woelfer, American Honda’s vice president of auto sales, said affordability and fuel efficiency were resonating with customers. He also said hybrids accounted for about 30% of Honda sales as customers sought more efficient options.
