Use your Vanilla Visa gift card as a payment card: select Credit or Debit, enter the card details in the card-payment fields, and provide billing information if requested. Before placing the order, check that the card’s available balance covers the full total—including tax and shipping—because some transaction types may require an authorization hold above the purchase amount.
Steps to use your card at online checkout
- Check the available balance. Use Vanilla’s balance service or the phone number printed on the card. Compare the available amount with the full order total, including taxes and shipping. Vanilla’s FAQ explains how to check the balance.
- Choose the card-payment option. Select “Credit” or “Debit,” not the merchant’s “Gift Card” option. Vanilla instructs cardholders to use the credit- or debit-card fields for its Visa gift cards. Vanilla’s online-use instructions.
- Enter the card details. Type the card number, Valid Through date, and security code as printed on the physical card or shown with the eGift card.
- Fill in billing details if requested. Enter the cardholder’s name and their own address. Vanilla says there is no preset billing address and registration is not required for online purchases. If the checkout asks for a ZIP code, Vanilla’s FAQ says to use your own ZIP code.
- Review the amount being authorized. Vanilla says some transaction types may require a hold of up to 20% above the purchase amount. That is a possible authorization requirement, not a general rate; the authorization amount can be higher than the final order total.

Where the card works—and where it may not
Vanilla says its Visa gift cards can be used with merchants in the United States and District of Columbia that accept Visa debit cards. Its FAQ excludes recurring billing and ATM transactions. A purchase can also fail if the merchant requires a physical card and you are trying to use an eGift card without an accepted mobile-wallet payment.
The Valid Through date on a physical card or eGift card is used to facilitate transactions; Vanilla says the funds themselves do not expire. Vanilla also says the balance cannot be transferred to a bank account.

- Use your Visa Gift Card in the U.S. everywhere Visa debit cards are accepted, including online.
If your online payment is declined
- Check the available balance against the complete order total, including shipping and taxes, and account for a possible authorization hold.
- Make sure you selected Credit or Debit and entered the card details correctly.
- Use the cardholder’s own name and address for billing prompts; if asked for a ZIP code, use your own.
- Check whether the merchant and purchase fit Vanilla’s stated U.S. and D.C. acceptance limits, and whether the transaction involves recurring billing or requires a physical card.
These checks follow Vanilla’s published instructions, but they may not explain every merchant-specific decline. If the payment still fails, contact the merchant or Vanilla using the support details printed on the card or listed in the official FAQ.
