Ryan Bloch and his wife were moved from business class to economy on their return flight from Bali after Jetstar changed the aircraft, according to news reports published on 18 October 2024. The revised booking showed a $320 charge to confirm their seats; Jetstar later said that charge appeared because of a processing error and should not have been applied.

What happened to the couple’s return booking?

The couple had booked Jetstar travel through the Qantas website using Qantas Frequent Flyer points, PerthNow and The Nightly reported. The issue arose on their flight home from Bali. After they had travelled to Bali, they received revised tickets showing economy seats instead of their booked business-class seats, along with a request to pay $320 to confirm the booking.

The reports distinguish the booking channel from the airline operating the flight: the travel was booked through Qantas, but Jetstar was the airline that changed the return flight. The incident does not mean Qantas operated the flight.

Why did Jetstar move them to economy?

Jetstar told PerthNow and The Nightly that a maintenance requirement led it to substitute an Airbus A321neo LR for the planned Boeing 787. The replacement aircraft did not have business seating, so passengers were moved into economy, the airline said. These details are the airline’s reported explanation for the aircraft change and downgrade; they are not a general statement about Jetstar’s current aircraft or cabin configuration.

Why were they asked to pay $320?

Jetstar said the $320 confirmation payment appeared because of a processing error. The airline also said an agent had incorrectly charged for economy seat selection. It said the additional charge was waived. The reports therefore describe the payment request as an error, not a fee the couple needed to pay to retain the revised economy seats.

What did Jetstar offer after the downgrade?

Jetstar said affected passengers moved to economy would receive complimentary meals, in-flight entertainment and additional baggage allowance. PerthNow also reported that Jetstar arranged lounge access for the couple before their return flight and offered each of them a $200 Jetstar travel voucher. Those additional remedies are as reported by PerthNow, rather than independently verified booking records.

How did the couple describe resolving the problem?

Bloch told news.com.au he spent “a good nine hours” trying to resolve the issue. The Nightly reported that the couple received confirmation of economy seats the day before departure without the $320 confirmation charge, while also reporting a separate seat-selection payment of more than $60. These are details attributed to the reporting and Bloch’s account, not a broader measure of airline service or a finding about what other passengers should expect.

Jetstar’s spokesperson, quoted by PerthNow, apologised: “We appreciate this was a frustrating experience for Mr and Mrs Bloch and we sincerely apologise.” Consumer Champion Adam Glezer criticised the communication and care shown in situations like this. Bloch said he thought “something is wrong here” and described the trip as “supposed to be a beautiful holiday.”

What the story does—and does not—establish

  • The reported downgrade concerned one couple’s Jetstar return flight from Bali in October 2024, after an aircraft substitution left no business cabin on the replacement aircraft.
  • Jetstar attributed the substitution to maintenance and described the $320 confirmation charge as a processing error.
  • The reports document the couple’s reported experience and the airline’s response. They do not establish the remedies or legal rights applicable to other passengers, or current Jetstar or Qantas booking terms.
