5 Practical Ways to Build a Strong Career Selling Cars

The promise of getting rich selling cars is not verified. These five practical areas can help salespeople and dealers focus on skills, earnings, inventory, and compliance.

There is no verified formula for getting rich selling cars, and a dealership’s gross profit is not a salesperson’s take-home pay. The available excerpt from TheRichest article with that promise reveals only one tip—“Evaluate Your Selling Skills”—not the complete five-tip list. Rather than guess at the missing advice, here are five practical areas to examine if you want to earn more in U.S. car sales or run a dealership responsibly.

1. Assess your selling skills honestly

The only tip visible in the search excerpt for TheRichest’s article is “Evaluate Your Selling Skills.” The fragment advises honesty about your own abilities, but the article could not be accessed to verify the other four tips or the context around this one. This is a sensible starting point, not a complete career plan.

For a car-sales role, assess how well you listen, explain options plainly, follow up reliably, and respond to objections without pressuring a customer. Ask a manager or experienced colleague for specific feedback, and track your own activity and outcomes. A weakness you can name—such as inconsistent follow-up—is easier to work on than a vague goal to “sell more.”

2. Understand what a salesperson earns versus what a dealer earns

Dealer gross profit and personal income are different measures. An FTC staff document cites more than $6,000 in average gross profit per vehicle for independent used-vehicle dealers, using 2019 data from the NIADA Used Car Industry Report 2020. That historical dealer-level figure is not a current salesperson salary or commission estimate; it does not account for a particular store’s expenses, compensation plan, market, or an individual’s results. Read the FTC staff document.

Before accepting a sales position, ask the employer to explain the compensation plan in writing. Clarify how commission is calculated, when it is paid, whether bonuses or incentives apply, and how the plan treats cancellations, trade-ins, or other adjustments. The available sources do not establish a current, comparable earnings figure for car salespeople, so evaluate the actual offer rather than treating dealership profit figures as a promise about your income.

3. Learn how inventory decisions affect dealership performance

For dealership operators, inventory is both an opportunity and a financial risk: the vehicles a store acquires, prices, and holds affect its ability to sell profitably. The National Automobile Dealers Association’s used-vehicle inventory guide addresses inventory management and salesperson compensation incentives as dealer-management topics. It does not establish a guaranteed return or a specific earnings result.

Salespeople can still benefit from understanding the vehicles in stock, their features, and the store’s pricing and trade-in processes. Operators should connect inventory decisions and sales incentives to clear business goals, rather than assuming that more units sold automatically mean more profit.

4. Handle used-car disclosures correctly

In the United States, the FTC Used Car Rule generally covers dealers that sell or offer more than five used vehicles in a 12-month period. Covered dealers generally must display a Buyers Guide before offering a vehicle for sale, including before displaying it or allowing a customer to inspect it for purchase, and provide the buyer a copy at sale. The federal rule has state-specific exceptions and interacts with state requirements; Maine and Wisconsin have similar regulations, and state warranty or “as is” laws can affect which guide applies. Check the FTC’s Dealer’s Guide to the Used Car Rule and applicable state law.

The Buyers Guide communicates whether a used vehicle is sold “as is” or with a warranty and describes relevant warranty coverage. It also warns that oral promises can be difficult to enforce, encourages written promises, and recommends an independent mechanic’s inspection. If a transaction is conducted in Spanish, the FTC guide says a Spanish Buyers Guide must be displayed.

5. Advertise a price transparently

For U.S. automobile advertising, the FTC’s pricing guidance says an advertised price should generally include dealer-required fees a buyer must pay to purchase the vehicle. Certain government-required charges paid directly by the consumer may be excluded. Dealers should apply the guidance to the specific charge and transaction rather than assume every fee can be left out. See the FTC’s Automobile Industry Pricing Transparency FAQs.

Clear pricing and accurate disclosures are part of responsible selling, not a shortcut to a guaranteed income level. The FTC materials describe federal guidance; they do not replace checking state and local requirements.
