That price threshold is only a starting point: destination, dealer additions, taxes and fees can push the final cost over budget. Reliability data also offers predictions and longevity measures, not a guarantee about an individual car.
Which new gas cars start below $25,000?
Cars.com’s April 28, 2026 price coverage identified seven 2026 models with at least one trim starting below $25,000. The qualifying trims are generally entry-level versions; a model name alone does not mean every trim is under the cap. The list includes compact sedans and subcompact crossovers.

Cars.com reported that none of these qualifying models offered all-wheel drive. Check current inventory and the exact trim before relying on the price snapshot; it is not a promise of local availability or a negotiated price. Cars.com’s 2026 under-$25,000 list has the price details.
What “reliable” means in the available evidence
Reliability ratings describe patterns in groups of vehicles. They help estimate risk, but cannot tell you whether a particular car will have problems or how well it was maintained.

Consumer Reports: owner-reported problems and predictions
Consumer Reports’ December 2025 survey report drew on about 380,000 vehicles, spanning model years 2000–2025 plus some early 2026 vehicles. It gathers owner-reported problems across 20 trouble areas and weighs problem severity and owner impact to produce predicted reliability ratings. The sample size describes the survey, not a failure rate for any one car. Consumer Reports ranked Toyota first and Honda fourth among brands in its 2025 brand ranking; those brand results do not establish that every model, model year or trim will be trouble-free. Consumer Reports explains its reliability findings and approach.
For model-specific context, Consumer Reports expected the 2026 Honda Civic and 2026 Toyota Corolla to be more reliable than the average new car, based on earlier model years. Its indexed pages also reported one NHTSA recall for each at the time they were checked. Recall counts can change; check the current recall record for the specific vehicle identification number before buying. Consumer Reports’ 2026 Civic reliability page and its 2026 Corolla reliability page provide the model-level context.

iSeeCars: longevity-based scores
iSeeCars measures reliability around useful lifespan and a vehicle’s ability to reach 200,000 miles or more, using analysis of millions of vehicles. Its broader Quality Score also incorporates value retention and safety. In its 2026 ranking of small cars under $25,000, it rated the Honda Civic 8.0/10, Mazda3 sedan 7.9/10 and Volkswagen Jetta 7.6/10 for reliability. These are iSeeCars scores from its longevity analysis, not Consumer Reports predictions or universal grades. See iSeeCars’ small-car ranking and methodology.
The iSeeCars ranking is useful for understanding longevity among small cars priced under $25,000, but it does not show that every listed model is currently sold new below that price. The Civic, Mazda3 sedan and Jetta therefore should not be added to the new-car shortlist on the strength of that ranking alone.

How to interpret the Corolla’s price
Price figures can differ because one includes destination and another may not. Toyota listed a 2026 Corolla base MSRP of $23,125; Cars.com listed the Corolla LE at $24,320 including destination. Those are different price definitions, not contradictory quotes. Toyota’s figure is the base MSRP shown on its 2026 model page, while Cars.com’s figure includes destination. Toyota’s 2026 Corolla page and Cars.com’s price coverage show the respective figures.
Neither number is an out-the-door quote. Ask the dealer for an itemized price for the exact vehicle, including destination, options, dealer-installed items, taxes, title and registration. Compare that total with your budget rather than comparing a base MSRP to a final purchase price.

How to choose among the seven
The price list identifies possible starting points, not a complete head-to-head ranking. Before choosing, compare the specific trims you can actually buy:
- Total price: Request an itemized out-the-door quote and check whether the selected trim remains within your cap.
- Body style and space: Decide whether a compact sedan or subcompact crossover better suits passengers, cargo and parking needs.
- Drivetrain: None of the qualifying models in Cars.com’s list offered AWD, so do not assume one is available below the threshold.
- Reliability evidence: Keep owner-survey predictions, longevity rankings and brand-level results separate; they measure different things and may cover different model years.
- Everyday fit: Compare fuel economy, safety equipment and comfort on the exact trims. The cited price and reliability sources do not provide a complete like-for-like specification table for all seven.
If you meant used cars
A used-car list needs a different standard of proof. A model’s reputation or a ranking cannot establish that a particular used example is a good buy. Research the exact model year, realistic local asking prices, vehicle history, maintenance and inspection condition, and current recall status. Reliability can vary substantially with age, upkeep and prior use; a nameplate alone is not enough to recommend a used vehicle.
