Gina Rinehart became Australia’s richest person through a combination of inherited royalty income and the growth of Hancock Prospecting into a major iron ore business, especially through Roy Hill. Forbes Australia’s 2026 rich list estimates her wealth at US$24.6 billion and ranks her first in the country. That is a dated estimate, not an audited account of her personal finances.

She inherited a foundation, then led Hancock Prospecting

Hancock Prospecting was founded by Lang and Hope Hancock in 1955. After Lang Hancock died, Gina Rinehart became the company’s executive chairman in 1992, according to Hancock Prospecting’s company interview.

Her starting point included more than the leadership of a mining company. A 2011 Forbes profile reported that Lang Hancock’s estate included a half-share of a royalty paid by Rio Tinto. The profile described that income as helping keep Rinehart and Hancock Prospecting afloat after his death. It also documented her pursuit of mine-development interests beyond the royalty. This is historical reporting about the period following her father’s death, not a description of the company’s present finances.

Iron ore operations grew into the core of the business

The modern scale of Hancock Prospecting is tied to operating mines and shipments, not just the inherited royalty. Roy Hill, Hope Downs and Atlas Iron are among the operations highlighted in the company’s FY2025 results. Hancock Prospecting reported that they shipped a combined 91 million tonnes of iron ore in that financial year, including 61.6 million tonnes from Roy Hill alone. Forbes Australia’s 2025 coverage described Roy Hill as Hancock’s biggest asset.

Hancock Prospecting also reported A$3.081 billion in net profit after tax for FY2025. This is a company-reported result for the financial year, not Rinehart’s personal income or net worth. The company is privately owned, and its results do not provide a precise calculation of how its performance translates into her personal fortune.

Rinehart’s interests are not limited to iron ore. Forbes Australia reported rare-earths investments in 2025, which provide context for the company’s broader interests but do not displace iron ore as the central explanation for its scale.

Her ranking and estimated fortune depend on the year

Forbes Australia’s 2026 list estimates Rinehart’s wealth at US$24.6 billion and ranks her first among Australians. The list says the estimate fell 15%, citing lower iron ore prices and regulatory pressures. Forbes Australia estimated her wealth at US$30.6 billion in its 2023 list. These are estimates from separate annual list editions, not audited statements or a reconciled account of changes in her assets and liabilities.

Source and edition Estimated wealth What the figure represents
Forbes Australia, 2026 US$24.6 billion Estimated wealth; ranked first in Australia. The list reports a 15% decline from its prior estimate.
Forbes Australia, 2023 US$30.6 billion Estimated wealth on that year’s list; not directly reconciled to the 2026 figure.

The figures should not be confused with Hancock Prospecting’s company profit or shipment totals. A rich-list estimate concerns an individual’s wealth; company results describe business performance. The sources do not provide a transparent, audited breakdown of the assets and liabilities behind the 2026 estimate.
