Hiroki Totoki became interim CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE), the company behind PlayStation, on April 1, 2024, following Jim Ryan’s departure. Totoki held the interim title until June 1, 2024, when he became SIE Chairman and leadership was divided between platform chief Hideaki Nishino and studio chief Hermen Hulst. Nishino became SIE President and CEO on April 1, 2025; Totoki became Sony Group President and CEO that day.
Why Totoki took over from Jim Ryan
On September 27, 2023, Sony said Jim Ryan had decided to retire in March 2024 after nearly 30 years with the PlayStation business. Sony named Totoki—then Sony Group President, COO and CFO—as SIE Chairman effective October 2023 and Interim CEO effective April 1, 2024. He was to continue his Sony Group responsibilities while working with Sony Group CEO Kenichiro Yoshida and SIE management on PlayStation’s next chapter and CEO succession. Sony’s September 2023 announcement gives the succession plan; a February 2024 Sony Group notice also listed Totoki as SIE Interim CEO from April 1. Sony Group executive changes notice

How long was Totoki interim head of PlayStation?
His SIE Interim CEO title ran from April 1 through May 31, 2024. On June 1, the new structure took effect: Totoki stepped down as interim CEO and became SIE Chairman, with Nishino and Hulst leading their respective business groups. This distinction matters because Totoki had already become SIE Chairman in October 2023, before taking the interim CEO role the following April.
