The January 2025 profile of Donald Trump’s incoming team named a mix of elected officials, nominees, advisers and special-role appointees—not a group made up solely of cabinet members. Its evidence also varied: public statements, legislative activity and reported Bitcoin holdings are different things, and a nomination is not proof of confirmation. The roster below reflects the profile published January 20 and updated January 21, 2025, rather than a verified list of current officeholders.
Who the January 2025 profile included
Cybernews’s January 2025 profile named the following people in connection with Trump’s incoming administration and its Bitcoin or broader cryptocurrency posture. Their roles and the evidence cited for them were not equivalent.
| Person | Role in the profile | What the connection means |
|---|---|---|
| Donald Trump | President-elect at the time | Made an explicit pro-Bitcoin pledge during his July 2024 campaign speech. |
| JD Vance | Vice president-elect at the time | Decrypt reported a Bitcoin holding range from a financial disclosure covering 2023; that is evidence of a reported holding, not by itself a policy position. |
| Scott Bessent | Treasury secretary nominee | A nominee for a senior economic post; nomination did not itself establish confirmation or a particular Bitcoin policy. |
| Howard Lutnick | Commerce secretary nominee | A nominee, not necessarily a confirmed officeholder at the time of the profile. |
| Robert F. Kennedy Jr. | Health and Human Services secretary nominee | A nominee whose inclusion did not make the roster a list of confirmed cabinet members. |
| Michael Waltz | National security adviser | Decrypt reported a Bitcoin holding range in a 2023 disclosure; a reported holding does not establish policy advocacy. |
| Tulsi Gabbard | Director of national intelligence nominee | A nominee for an intelligence role, not a cabinet secretary. |
| Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy | Associated with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) | The profile connected them to a government-efficiency role, rather than a conventional cabinet department. |
| Paul Atkins | Securities and Exchange Commission chair nominee | A nominee for an independent regulatory agency; nomination alone did not establish confirmation. |
| David O. Sacks | White House AI and Crypto Czar | A special White House role focused on AI and crypto, distinct from a cabinet secretary position. |
The roster and role descriptions are from the January 20, 2025 Cybernews profile, updated January 21, 2025. Because the profile was written during the transition, its forward-looking titles should not be read as proof that every nominee took office.
What “pro-Bitcoin” meant in Trump’s case
At the Bitcoin Conference in Nashville on July 27, 2024, then-candidate Trump said: “Ultimately, my promise to each and every one of you is this: I will be the pro-innovation and pro-bitcoin president that America needs and our citizens deserve.” That is a direct, Bitcoin-specific campaign statement, not merely a general expression of support for crypto. The speech is available from the C-SPAN transcript and video.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Trump also pledged in the speech to retain government Bitcoin as the core of a strategic stockpile. In November 2024, The Washington Post described the pledge as a promise to stop selling Bitcoin held by the government and noted uncertainty over implementation at the time. Retaining Bitcoin obtained through seizures is different from spending public funds to buy more. The Post also reported a separate proposal by Senator Cynthia Lummis to acquire up to 1 million coins; that was a legislative proposal, not a completed purchase or proof of an administration decision. See The Washington Post’s November 27, 2024 report.
Why the reported holdings do not tell the whole story
Financial disclosures can show a reported personal investment range, but they do not establish whether a person supports a specific government policy. Nor do they show a present-day balance. Decrypt reported that Vance’s disclosure, filed in 2024 for the 2023 reporting period, listed Bitcoin holdings in the range of $250,000–$500,000. It reported Waltz’s 2023 disclosure range as $50,001–$100,000. These are dated disclosure ranges, not current valuations or independently verified balances. The figures and their context are reported in Decrypt’s transition coverage.

For each person, keep four questions separate: what role they held or were expected to hold, whether the evidence concerns Bitcoin specifically or crypto generally, whether it is a statement, vote, reported disclosure or appointment, and when that evidence dates from. A Bitcoin holding is not a policy endorsement; broad crypto support is not automatically Bitcoin-specific; and an appointment or nomination does not prove a policy outcome.

A later official transcript records Trump being asked whether his administration planned to accumulate sizable amounts of Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies. He said the matter had been discussed and that he would rely on Paul Atkins and the group for decisions and recommendations. That establishes discussion and a stated reliance on recommendations, not an approved sizable buying program. The exchange appears in the official transcript DCPD202600547.

This distinction matters when interpreting the earlier stockpile pledge. Keeping government-held Bitcoin, much of it obtained through seizures, would not by itself mean the government bought additional coins. The available statements described above do not establish that a large-scale purchase program was approved or carried out.

How to read the roster
- It is a dated transition snapshot. The profile describes the incoming team in January 2025, not a current official roster.
- It is not a cabinet-only list. It includes nominees, elected officials, advisers and people linked to DOGE or a special White House role.
- The evidence is mixed. Public pledges, a reported financial disclosure and a nomination answer different questions and should not be treated as interchangeable proof of a shared policy.
