A 1994 Ford Escort RS Cosworth sold for £39,375 at a UK auction in August 2025. A low-mileage 1996 Lux sold for £132,750 in February 2026. The spread between those two sales is as important as the headline prices: a Cosworth’s value depends heavily on the individual car. Either sale can exceed a new Mustang Dark Horse’s price in some markets, but the available figures do not establish a like-for-like comparison for every buyer.
What the two Escort RS Cosworth sales show
These are completed UK auction results, not asking prices or a representative price range for every Escort RS Cosworth. The cars differed substantially in mileage and specification:
| Car and sale | Reported result | Details in the listing |
|---|---|---|
| 1994 Escort RS Cosworth, Iconic Auctioneers’ Silverstone Festival sale, 24 August 2025 | £39,375 | Manual, right-hand drive, described as original or highly original; 28,000 miles marked TMU. CLASSIC.COM sale record |
| 1996 Escort RS Cosworth Lux, Iconic Auctioneers’ Race Retro sale, 21 February 2026 | £132,750 | 3,000 miles, manual, right-hand drive, described as original or highly original. CLASSIC.COM sale record |
The low-mileage Lux brought more than three times the 1994 car’s reported result, but two transactions cannot tell buyers what a typical example should cost. They show why comparing a specific Cosworth requires looking beyond the model name.
Why the Cosworth attracts collector interest
Ford’s RS history identifies the Escort RS Cosworth as part of the company’s rally-homologation program, introduced in 1992, with all-wheel drive and factory output of 220 PS. That competition connection gives the model a distinct place in Ford’s performance history. Ford’s RS model history

For a collector car, the particular example can matter as much as the underlying model. Mileage, condition, originality, documented history, location and the circumstances of a sale can all affect what bidders are willing to pay. The auction listings describe both cited cars as original or highly original, but that wording is not a substitute for checking a car’s records and condition independently.
Exceptional auction results should not be treated as reliable forecasts of resale value. Hagerty UK Head of Valuations John Mayhead made that point about a different Ford, a Sierra Cosworth RS500, saying two determined bidders were willing to spend more than the car was likely to return if sold again the next day. That comment concerns the Sierra, not the Escort, but it illustrates why an individual auction result may not represent a repeatable market price. Hagerty UK’s account of the Sierra RS500 sale

How the Mustang Dark Horse differs
The Mustang Dark Horse is a new performance car, not a collectible 1990s rally-derived model. In its 14 September 2022 launch announcement, Ford described a modified 5.0-litre V8 projected to produce 500 horsepower, track-focused cooling, a standard six-speed manual and an available 10-speed automatic. These are launch specifications; they are not a current price or a guarantee that every market’s version has identical equipment. Ford’s Dark Horse launch release
The difference is partly about what the buyer is purchasing. A Dark Horse offers a modern, factory-built road-and-track performance package. A Cosworth purchase is also a bet on a particular classic car’s condition, originality and provenance, with the associated need to assess the vehicle and its records.

Why the price comparison needs a market and a price basis
The Cosworth figures above are UK auction results in pounds. They cannot be compared directly with a Dark Horse price in another country without accounting for geography, taxes, model year, local specification and transaction type. A completed auction sale is not the same measure as a manufacturer’s suggested retail price.
Ford has announced Dark Horse retail figures for specific Latin American markets: R$649,000 for the 2025 model in Brazil and an ARS 128,500,000 suggested retail price in Argentina announced in August 2025. Neither is a US MSRP, and the figures are not directly comparable with the UK auction results. Ford Brazil’s 2025 Dark Horse announcement · Ford Argentina’s August 2025 announcement
The available figures do not establish a current US Dark Horse MSRP or a representative, matched-market series of Escort RS Cosworth sales. A buyer in the United States, for example, would need current local pricing for the Mustang and comparable local Cosworth transactions before drawing a direct financial comparison.

What to compare before deciding which costs more
- Use the same geography: compare prices from the buyer’s market and account for relevant taxes and import costs.
- Keep price types separate: distinguish a completed auction result from an MSRP, dealer price or private asking price.
- Compare specific cars: check mileage, condition, originality and documented provenance rather than assuming all Cosworths have the same collector value.
- Match the time period: use current prices for the Dark Horse model year and the same period’s transactions for comparable Cosworths.
- Assess the ownership purpose: weigh a classic’s individual condition and history against the Dark Horse’s modern performance equipment and intended road-and-track use.
