Heart Aerospace’s “electric airline flights in four years” headline referred to a 2028 service target reported in July 2024. That is no longer the company’s current schedule: in September 2026, Heart said its production aircraft, the 36-seat hybrid-electric ES-36, is targeted to enter service in 2031, after FAA Part 25 certification. Its X1 demonstrator has flown, but that experimental flight was not an ES-36 passenger flight or certification.
Where the four-year promise came from
New Atlas published “Heart Aerospace promises electric airline flights in four years” on July 29, 2024. The article described Heart’s ES-30 and a planned 2028 entry into service—four years after publication. That was a forecast, not a permanent launch date.
Heart announced the ES-36 as its production aircraft in September 2026, describing it as an evolution of the earlier ES-30. The company now targets entry into service in 2031.
What Heart says it is building
The ES-36 is a 36-seat regional airliner with a series-hybrid powertrain. Heart says each of its two powertrains uses a 1.65-megawatt electric motor to turn a propeller. Batteries charged on the ground are intended to support all-electric flights; two turbogenerators supplement them for longer hybrid flights.

These are manufacturer-published specifications, not independently demonstrated commercial performance. Heart’s ES-36 product page also lists 25 kg (55 lb) of luggage per passenger and a 30-minute charging time; these, too, are company figures.
What has flown—and what remains ahead
Heart says its X1 demonstrator made its first flight on August 12, 2026. The company reported a 27-minute piloted flight that reached 1,100 feet above ground level. It was flown under an FAA Special Airworthiness Certificate in the Experimental Category. Heart describes X1 as a technology and development demonstrator representative of the ES-30, intended to test technologies, aerodynamics, flight performance and aircraft-development capability.

The X1 flight was not the first flight of the production ES-36, type certification, or airline service. Heart’s September 2026 announcement says the first pre-production ES-36 is being built at its Los Angeles pilot manufacturing plant. The company targets its first flight in the second half of 2028 and says FAA Part 25 certification is required before the targeted 2031 entry into service.
The milestones are distinct:
- Completed: Heart reports an experimental X1 demonstrator flight.
- Targeted: ES-36 first flight in the second half of 2028.
- Required before service: FAA Part 25 certification.
- Targeted: ES-36 entry into service in 2031.
What the JSX agreement does—and does not—mean
Heart says JSX signed a deposit-backed purchase agreement for 50 ES-36 aircraft, with purchase rights for 50 additional aircraft. The companies say they will work together on cabin configuration, charging and turnaround procedures, route planning and airport readiness. This is a customer commitment and planning partnership; it does not mean aircraft have been delivered, certified or placed in scheduled passenger service.

How to interpret the range, emissions and cost claims
Heart says all-electric routes would have zero operational CO₂ emissions, while hybrid operation would produce substantially lower emissions. “Operational” matters: that claim is not a full lifecycle emissions comparison, and the company material does not establish an independently verified lifecycle result.
Heart also targets operating costs at least 40 percent below those of legacy regional aircraft, citing energy, maintenance and simplified systems. Its product page presents a relative direct-operating-cost comparison with turboprops and regional jets. These are company projections, not independent measurements of a certified aircraft in passenger service.

What passengers can reasonably conclude
The ES-36 is intended to fly short routes on battery power and longer routes in hybrid mode; it is not an all-electric aircraft for every trip. Heart’s current plan is a 2031 service target, contingent on certification, with an ES-36 first flight targeted for the second half of 2028. The company has reported a demonstrator flight and a customer agreement, but neither establishes that airline flights are imminent or that the schedule will be met.
Heart’s September 23, 2026 announcement is the source for the production design, schedule and JSX agreement. Its August 13, 2026 X1 announcement describes the demonstrator flight and its experimental status.
