Haven Life announced in July 2018 that it had broadened eligibility for its Haven Term policy to include more non-U.S. citizens and applicants with certain chronic or complicated medical histories. The announcement is historical, not confirmation that Haven Term is accepting applications under the same rules today. It also did not mean that a diagnosis guaranteed approval: underwriting considers each applicant’s health and other circumstances, and can affect both eligibility and price.
What Haven Life announced in 2018
On July 17, 2018, Haven Life said it had expanded eligibility for Haven Term to more non-U.S. citizens and people with medical histories that could make underwriting less straightforward. The company named diabetes, anxiety, depression, sleep apnea, post-traumatic stress disorder and obesity as examples. It described coverage of up to $1 million, subject to approval and underwriting; that ceiling and those criteria are figures from the 2018 announcement, not verified current offer terms. Haven Life’s July 2018 announcement described Haven Term as issued by MassMutual.
The announcement is best understood as a change in who could be considered, not a promise that every applicant in the named groups would qualify. Haven Life’s materials say that underwriting assesses the individual rather than treating a single diagnosis as an automatic decision.
How the reported AI underwriting worked
VentureBeat’s 2018 account described algorithms checking application information against records and generating follow-up questions when information was ambiguous. Applications that did not receive an immediate green light could be sent to a human underwriter for a fuller review. This was reporting about the process at that time, not a current technical specification or proof that an algorithm alone made every decision. VentureBeat’s 2018 report quoted Haven Life policy-design head Mark Sayre saying the role of AI was not to replace humans.

Can I get life insurance if I have diabetes or depression?
Possibly. A chronic diagnosis does not by itself establish whether an applicant will be approved or what premium they will pay. Haven Life’s explanation of pre-existing conditions says diabetes, hypertension and depression do not necessarily prevent favorable rates, while emphasizing that outcomes depend on the individual. A condition’s severity, treatment and broader application details may matter; the source does not promise a particular result for any diagnosis. See Haven Life’s explanation of buying life insurance with a pre-existing condition.

Underwriting can consider more than diagnoses. Haven Life’s 2022 explainer lists health and prescription history, family history, tobacco use, driving, occupation and hobbies among relevant factors, as well as financial suitability and behavior. Different applicants may therefore receive different eligibility decisions or risk classifications even when they share a diagnosis. A risk class is a way to group applicants and set premiums; it is not a guarantee of a particular rate. Haven Life’s underwriting explainer describes these factors.
Can a non-U.S. citizen buy term life insurance in the United States?
It depends on the insurer’s current rules, the applicant’s circumstances and the policy available in their state. In a July 2018 article, Haven Life said noncitizens living in the United States applying online needed to submit an eligible visa or green card. It reported 16 accepted document types at that time. Those are historical requirements, not a current document list or assurance of eligibility. Haven Life’s 2018 article about applications from non-U.S. citizens also said a medical exam was required for that pathway then.

Will I need a medical exam?
Not necessarily for every life-insurance application. Haven Life’s general underwriting explainer says some applicants may qualify for a process without a medical exam; that does not establish that every applicant can avoid one. The 2018 noncitizen application route described above did require an exam, according to Haven Life’s article at the time. Confirm the exam requirement for the specific insurer, policy and application route before applying.

The cited materials do not confirm whether Haven Life is currently accepting new Haven Term applications or whether its 2018 eligibility criteria, visa documentation, exam rules, coverage limit or underwriting process remain in effect. A 2021 Haven Life article described Haven Life as a direct-to-consumer agency and Haven Technologies as a wholly owned MassMutual subsidiary, but it does not establish current Haven Term availability. Haven Life’s 2021 article introducing Haven Technologies provides that historical company context.

Before relying on the 2018 announcement, check current official application materials or contact the insurer or a licensed agent. Verify whether the product is offered in your state, which company issues it, what documents are accepted, whether an exam is required, and how your medical history will be evaluated. The available sources do not establish current state-specific criteria.
