In India, oil marketing companies cut retail petrol and diesel prices by ₹2 per litre each nationwide in March 2024. Earlier central excise-duty cuts in November 2021 and May 2022 were also reported as passed on to consumers. But a tax reduction does not always lower the price at the pump: in March 2026, the government cut excise duty by ₹10 per litre on each fuel while explicitly saying retail prices would not change.
What counts as a price reduction?
Three different changes can affect what a motorist pays: a central excise-duty change, a retail-price revision by an oil marketing company (OMC), or a change in the final city-level pump price. The last can vary with state VAT and local factors, so a nationwide policy announcement does not by itself establish the price at every pump.
Petrol prices have been market-determined since 26 June 2010 and diesel prices since 19 October 2014. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas says public-sector OMCs take pricing decisions. What reductions were passed on to consumers?
November 2021 and May 2022: central excise cuts
The Government of India reported that central excise duty was reduced by a cumulative ₹13 per litre for petrol and ₹16 per litre for diesel across the two rounds. It said the reductions were fully passed on to consumers; some state governments also reduced VAT. Government of India, 2024 statement on fuel prices and tax reductions.

March 2024: retail price cut
In March 2024, OMCs reduced retail prices by ₹2 per litre each for petrol and diesel across the country, according to the government. This was a retail-price revision, distinct from a reduction in central excise duty. Government of India, 2024 statement on fuel prices and tax reductions.
March 2026: excise cut without a pump-price cut
On 27 March 2026, the government announced a ₹10-per-litre excise-duty reduction on both fuels, but said the measure would not be passed on as a retail price cut. The stated purpose was to reduce under-recoveries absorbed by public-sector OMCs; pump prices were to remain unchanged. Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas / PIB, 27 March 2026.

What do the published Delhi prices show?
A Lok Sabha answer dated 29 January 2026 gave these Delhi prices and a November 2021 comparison. They are dated Delhi figures, not current rates for every city.

How to check what you will pay
- Check your city and fuel type. Petrol and diesel prices can differ by location because the final pump price includes state and local variation.
- Look for the effective date. A parliamentary answer or policy release reports prices or decisions as of a stated date; it is not a live price list.
- Identify the measure. Determine whether the news concerns central excise, state VAT, or an OMC retail-price revision.
- Confirm pass-through. A duty reduction only means a lower pump price if the relevant retail price is reduced; the March 2026 announcement explicitly said it was not.
The latest dated official price comparison cited here is for Delhi in the Lok Sabha answer of 29 January 2026. It should not be treated as an October 2026 city-by-city rate.
