Marriott said its licensing agreement with Sonder had ended and gave different guidance depending on where a guest booked: Marriott-channel customers would be contacted by Marriott, while people who booked through a third-party organization should contact that organization. Neither announcement guaranteed replacement accommodation or a refund.
What happened to Sonder before Thanksgiving 2025?
Sonder was a lodging operator sometimes described as an Airbnb rival; Airbnb itself was not involved in the events described here. On Nov. 9, 2025, Marriott announced that its licensing agreement with Sonder was no longer in effect, citing Sonder’s default. Marriott said Sonder properties were no longer available for new bookings through Marriott’s channels. Marriott’s Nov. 9 announcement
Sonder’s filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission says the company received Marriott’s written termination notice on Nov. 7. On Nov. 14, Sonder Holdings and certain direct and indirect subsidiaries filed voluntary petitions under Chapter 7 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware. Sonder’s SEC filing
These were separate steps: Marriott ended its licensing agreement first, and the U.S. Chapter 7 filings followed. Marriott did not own Sonder; the companies had a licensing agreement.

What should guests with a Sonder reservation have done?
Marriott’s stated guidance depended on the booking channel. It said it would contact guests who booked directly through Marriott channels. Guests who booked through a third-party online travel agency or other booking organization were told to contact that organization.
| Where the reservation was made | Marriott’s stated guidance |
|---|---|
| Directly through Marriott channels | Marriott said it would contact the guest. |
| Through a third-party booking organization | Contact the organization through which the reservation was made. |
Marriott described guest support as an immediate priority, but its statement did not promise that every guest would receive a replacement room, refund, or reimbursement. The announcement alone cannot establish what remedy applied to an individual reservation. Marriott’s guest guidance

What did guests report about access and cancellations?
A Nov. 17, 2025 Futurism report recounted accounts from guests who said their reservations were no longer honored. Interviewees described difficulties involving room access, replacement accommodation, and customer support. These are reported cases, not a comprehensive count, and they do not establish that every guest was removed or experienced the same disruption. Futurism’s Nov. 17 report

No. The Chapter 7 filing concerns Sonder Holdings and certain subsidiaries in the United States. As of Oct. 8, 2026, Sonder’s investor page also describes a 2026 court-supervised purchase involving Canadian Sonder entities. That later Canadian-entity development should not be confused with the U.S. operator’s November 2025 bankruptcy. Sonder’s investor page
