Han Solo’s original A New Hope DL-44 blaster sold for $1,057,500 at Rock Island Auction Company in Illinois in August 2022. Guinness World Records later recognized the sale as the highest price paid at auction for a prop gun. The record concerns one specific original film prop—not every DL-44 replica or blaster associated with another Star Wars film.
What sold, and when?
The record-setting object was the surviving original DL-44 prop made for Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. Guinness World Records describes it as one of three DL-44 props made for the 1976 production and one of three high-detail “hero props.” The sale took place in August 2022; Guinness published its account on February 6, 2023, and Rock Island Auction Company announced the record recognition in November 2023.
Guinness reported that the blaster had been expected to fetch $500,000, but the auction result exceeded $1 million. That was an estimate reported in the 2023 Guinness story, not a current appraisal or a prediction of what the prop would sell for today. Guinness World Records’ account names the sale as the most expensive prop gun sold at auction.
Why was the DL-44 more than a science-fiction design?
According to Guinness, the prop was assembled from existing firearm and optical components rather than purpose-built as a futuristic pistol. Its reported components included a Mauser C96 pistol, an MG81 flash-hider and a Hensoldt-Wetzlar rifle scope, with additional surface details. Guinness credits set director Roger Christian with selecting the basic components and armourer Carl Schmidt with assembling the prop.

Guinness also recounts an unusual custody history: the components were rented from Bapty for filming, returned afterward, stripped of their added details and disassembled. In 2010, Bapty owner Terry Watts reportedly asked Schmidt to search the company’s archives, leading to the pieces being reassembled. This history is the account published by Guinness; the cited coverage does not include a separate authentication report or independent archival documentation.
How does the record compare with other DL-44 sales?
Prices attached to a “Han Solo blaster” can refer to very different objects. Film, production use, construction, provenance and sale date all matter. The following are separate auction results, not a like-for-like measure of one collectible market:

- 1/1 Sacle Replica The Factory Entertainment Team spent many hours studying surviving original props as well as various videos and images. Charming as the eccentricities of the original props are, a deliberate choice was made to refine the replica by removing irregularities and anomalies that the original prop makers never intended to be seen.
- A 3D model was created from scratch using the source material as reference. All asymmetry was corrected, any distortion was removed, and any incomplete detail was restored. This resulted in a single optimized version of the blaster, and self-contained electronic light and sound effects were added. The body of the blaster is crafted from high-quality resin and features hand-painted details. The barrel is made from metal. A certificate of authenticity is included.
| Object | Reported result | What the figure describes |
|---|---|---|
| Original A New Hope DL-44 | $1,057,500, August 2022 | Rock Island Auction Company sale; Guinness later recognized it as the auction record for a prop gun. Guinness World Records |
| Return of the Jedi blaster prop | $550,000 | Earlier prop sale cited by Guinness as the previous comparison point. It was a distinct prop, not the same lot or production object. Guinness World Records |
| The Force Awakens action-static DL-44 prop | $22,500, 2026 | A separate later-film prop sold by Heritage Auctions. Heritage Auctions |
| Master Replicas DL-44 | $1,875, 2026 | A used licensed replica from 2002, numbered 565 of 1,500, sold by Heritage Auctions—not the original film prop or a current retail price. Heritage Auctions |
Can you buy a Han Solo DL-44 replica?
The record-setting original is an exceptional auction collectible, not a standard retail item. A replica is a different category: Heritage documents a full-scale licensed Master Replicas edition released in 2002, limited to 1,500 pieces and sold with a display base, case, plaque and certificate of authenticity. Its $1,875 result in 2026 reflects one used collectible at auction; it does not establish current availability or a typical price. Heritage Auctions’ listing describes that specific replica.
If you are considering a listing, check whether it is licensed, which film or edition it represents, whether it is a display replica or a production prop, and what documentation comes with it. Those details help distinguish a replica from a screen-used original and prevent an unrelated DL-44 sale from being mistaken for the record-setting object.
