How many A220s did LOT actually order?
Airbus announced on 16 June 2025 that LOT had ordered 40 aircraft firmly: 20 A220-100s and 20 A220-300s. The agreement includes scope to increase the total to 84, so that figure is a possible ceiling—not the number of aircraft already committed under the firm order. Airbus’s announcement describes the 40-aircraft order and potential increase. LOT’s 18 June release refers to a contract for 84 A220s; read alongside Airbus’s more explicit distinction, the announcements support describing 40 as firm and 84 as the potential total. LOT’s release gives its wording.

The Ministry’s statement is available on its LOT aircraft acquisition page. It is useful context for the firm program, but it does not establish a delivery timetable for any aircraft beyond those 40.
What the A220 order means for LOT’s Embraer fleet
LOT describes the A220 selection as part of replacing and modernizing its regional fleet. That supports saying the airline is beginning a regional fleet transition; it does not show that every Embraer will leave immediately or by a particular date. The official announcements cited here do not provide an aircraft-by-aircraft Embraer retirement schedule.

Accordingly, “Goodbye, Embraer” is shorthand for a change in LOT’s regional fleet plans, not a confirmed retirement deadline for the entire Embraer fleet. The confirmed timing is that A220s are expected to start joining LOT in 2027.
Why LOT says it chose the A220
LOT and Airbus frame the order as a way to renew the regional fleet and support the airline’s growth plans. LOT has also connected its longer-term ambitions to Poland’s planned Centralny Port Komunikacyjny (CPK), or Central Communication Port. In its 18 June 2025 release, LOT said it would focus, in the long term, on moving operations to the new hub. The statement does not give a date for such a move.

LOT CEO Michał Fijoł said the aircraft would help the airline compete in Europe and prepare for its intended role at CPK. Those are the airline’s stated aims, not demonstrated outcomes. The announcements do not provide a LOT-specific numerical case for savings, operating costs, fuel consumption, or passenger benefits compared with its Embraer aircraft.

Airbus describes the A220 family as accommodating 100–160 passengers and flying up to 3,600 nautical miles (6,700 km). Poland’s Ministry of Infrastructure also cites a maximum range of up to 6,700 km. These are family-level specifications reported by Airbus and the ministry; they do not establish the seating configuration LOT will use, the routes it will assign to a particular variant, or the aircraft’s operating range in a specific LOT configuration.

The order covers both A220 variants, but the announced split does not include a public allocation of seats or routes. The available announcements therefore establish the aircraft types and quantities, not how LOT will deploy each one.
