This guide is for South African Grade 12 Business Studies. “Business Roles” is one of four broad topic groupings in the Department of Basic Education (DBE) Grade 12 Teacher Guide; it is not a universal Grade 12 curriculum label. If you are studying in another country, use your own syllabus—for example, the Philippines has a separate Grade 12 subject framework called Business Ethics and Social Responsibility.

The DBE guide groups ethics and professionalism, social responsibility and corporate citizenship, human rights and inclusivity, environmental issues, and team performance and conflict management under Business Roles. Use the topic map below to revise concepts, then practise applying them to a business scenario rather than memorising headings alone.

What does Business Roles cover in South African Grade 12 Business Studies?

The South African DBE Grade 12 Teacher Guide identifies four main Business Studies topics, each with a 25% curriculum weighting. That describes the guide’s curriculum structure; it does not guarantee that Business Roles will account for 25% of a particular examination paper.

Within Business Roles, the guide includes:

  • Ethics and professionalism
  • Creative thinking and problem-solving
  • Social responsibility and corporate citizenship, including corporate social responsibility (CSR) and corporate social investment (CSI)
  • Human rights, inclusivity and environmental issues
  • Team performance assessment and conflict management

The DBE describes Business Studies as building knowledge, skills, attitudes and values for informed, productive, ethical and responsible participation in the formal and informal economic sectors. See the DBE Grade 12 Business Studies Teacher Guide for the official topic framing.

How should you revise ethics and professionalism?

Ethics and professionalism are about evaluating conduct and choices in a business setting. In a scenario question, do more than label an action “right” or “wrong”: show what the decision involves, who may be affected, and why a proposed response is responsible and workable.

  1. Identify the decision. State what the business, manager or employee must decide or change.
  2. Name the stakeholders. Consider relevant groups such as employees, customers, suppliers, owners, the community or the environment.
  3. Pinpoint the ethical or professional concern. Explain the conduct, responsibility or competing interests that make the situation difficult.
  4. Recommend and justify a response. Give a practical action and connect it to the concern and the people affected.

This is a study method, not a quoted DBE marking rubric. Follow the definitions and terminology in your prescribed textbook and teacher guidance.

What is corporate social responsibility (CSR), and how does CSI fit?

In the South African guide, social responsibility and corporate citizenship are grouped with CSR and CSI under Business Roles. Learn the meanings and distinctions your course materials use; do not assume that the terms are interchangeable if your textbook treats them differently.

When a question describes a company initiative, assess it through a few connected questions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Need: What social or community need is the initiative intended to address?
  • Stakeholders: Who benefits, who contributes and who may be affected?
  • Resources and activities: What money, time, skills or other resources does the business commit, and what does it actually do?
  • Business responsibilities: How does the initiative relate to the responsibilities or citizenship claims described in the scenario?
  • Evidence of results: What evidence would help judge whether the intended need was addressed?

These are useful analysis prompts, not official assessment criteria. Avoid assuming an initiative succeeded just because a business announced it; distinguish its stated purpose from evidence of outcomes.

How do human rights, inclusivity and environmental issues connect?

The DBE places human rights, inclusivity and environmental issues in the Business Roles grouping. For revision, be ready to explain what a scenario raises, which stakeholders are affected and what responsible action the business could take. Keep legal examples specific to South Africa and current: a curriculum topic heading by itself does not establish the details of a legal duty.

Rank #4

The Western Cape Education Department lists a Grade 12 resource covering human rights, environmental issues and inclusivity, including protection of the workplace environment. Its portal gives the resource revision date as 4 June 2026: Western Cape Grade 12 Business Studies resources.

How can you revise team performance and conflict management?

The DBE guide includes team performance assessment and conflict management in Business Roles. To practise, work through a team scenario in this order:

  1. Identify the source of the conflict rather than merely describing that team members disagree.
  2. Consider which members and business objectives are affected.
  3. Explain a fair, practical way to address the disagreement and support the team’s work.

Use specific facts from the scenario to support your reasoning. This practice sequence is a study prompt, not a claimed official exam format.

How should you use revision PDFs and exam guidance?

The DBE’s FET Business Studies page lists Grade 12 learner books and teacher guides in PDF and ebook formats. Its state-owned textbook resource page identifies Grade 10–12 Business Studies digital content from March 2022, including a Grade 12 learner book and teacher guide. These are official syllabus-aligned resources; the available information does not establish that a document with the exact title “Grade 12 Business Roles Revision Guide | PDF | Corporate Social Responsibility | Business Ethics” is itself an official DBE publication.

Use examination guidance as a supplement after confirming that it applies to your curriculum. The DBE says its Grade 12 examination guidelines articulate assessment aspirations and are not substitutes for CAPS curriculum documents. The Western Cape portal also lists Grade 12 Business Studies examination guidelines; check the relevant current document rather than treating a topic list or weighting as a promise about what an exam will ask.

What if your Grade 12 course is in the Philippines?

Do not use the South African Business Roles topic map as if it were the Philippine syllabus. Philippine Grade 12 module listings for Business Ethics and Social Responsibility emphasize entrepreneur responsibilities and accountabilities, as well as models or frameworks of social responsibility in sound business practice. Follow the module and terminology assigned for that course.

The subject is separately identified in the Philippine Department of Education’s curriculum materials: Department of Education, Business Ethics and Social Responsibility. The shared themes do not make the two national frameworks interchangeable.

A quick Business Roles practice checklist

  • Can you identify which South African Business Roles topic a scenario concerns?
  • Can you explain the ethical or professional issue and identify relevant stakeholders?
  • Can you distinguish CSR and CSI using your prescribed course definitions?
  • Can you assess an initiative by its need, stakeholders, resources, fit with business responsibilities and evidence of results?
  • Can you connect human rights, inclusion or environmental concerns to the facts without making unsupported legal claims?
  • Can you explain a fair response to team conflict and relate it to the team’s objectives?
