Did Google Invest $1.5 Billion in Blockchain Companies? What the Figure Means

A reported $1.5 billion total refers to four blockchain funding rounds involving Alphabet, not a verified amount Google invested itself.

Not exactly. A 2022 report said funding rounds involving Alphabet, Google’s parent company, totaled about $1.5 billion across four rounds from September 2021 through June 2022. That is the combined value of those rounds—not a verified amount that Google or Alphabet invested itself.

What the $1.5 billion figure measures

The figure was attributed to Blockdata and reported by Blockworks and CoinDesk. It describes the total value of four funding rounds in which Alphabet participated. Because each round included multiple investors, the round totals do not reveal how much Alphabet contributed.

Blockdata’s caveat, quoted in Blockworks’ 2022 coverage, was: “In most cases, we cannot determine how much money these corporations have invested, as they participate in funding rounds with multiple or many other investors.”

Which companies were connected to the rounds?

Reporting on the study named four companies: Fireblocks, Dapper Labs, Voltage, and Digital Currency Group. The reported information establishes their connection to the rounds, but does not establish Alphabet’s specific contribution to any company or round.

When did the reported activity take place?

The four rounds covered by the reported aggregate occurred between September 2021 and June 2022. The figure is historical: it describes that period and is not a measure of Alphabet’s current blockchain investment activity.

What the figure does—and does not—tell you

  • It does tell you: funding rounds involving Alphabet had a combined reported value of about $1.5 billion across the four named companies during the period.
  • It does not tell you: that Alphabet supplied the full $1.5 billion, how much it invested in each round, what terms or ownership stakes it received, or what happened to the companies afterward.

Blockworks and CoinDesk reported on the Blockdata study, but the original study was not available in the sources retrieved for this account. The precise Alphabet-only amount therefore is not established by the reported aggregate.

How this fits into Google’s broader blockchain activity

Google’s blockchain activity can include investments, partnerships, and acquisitions; a funding-round total covers only one kind of activity. CB Insights’ analysis provides that broader strategic context, but it does not independently verify the $1.5 billion figure. The round aggregate should not be treated as a complete measure of Google’s blockchain strategy.
