A CO₂ pipeline moves captured carbon dioxide to a storage site or industrial user. Green methanol production converts CO₂ and hydrogen into a fuel or chemical. It can provide a use for some captured CO₂, but it cannot transport the gas or deliver the same function as permanent geological storage.
Why methanol and pipelines are not direct substitutes
A pipeline moves CO₂
Carbon dioxide pipelines are part of the transport link in a carbon capture, utilization and storage chain. They carry a CO₂ stream from where it is captured toward a destination, which may be a geological storage site or a facility that uses the gas. The International Energy Agency (IEA) identifies pipelines and ships as the main options for large-scale CO₂ transport. Trucks and rail can serve shorter routes and smaller volumes, generally at higher cost per tonne. IEA, About CCUS.
Methanol converts CO₂
CO₂-derived methanol is made by combining CO₂, which supplies the carbon, with hydrogen. Producing hydrogen through electrolysis requires electricity. The methanol can then be used as a fuel or chemical feedstock. This is a conversion and product pathway, not a way to move CO₂ from a capture site to a plant or storage destination. IEA, Putting CO₂ to Use.
The precise distinction is that methanol can be an alternative use for some captured CO₂; it is not a general alternative transport system.

When pipelines or ships may make sense
The IEA says, “Pipelines are the cheapest way of transporting CO₂ in large quantities onshore and, depending on the distance and volumes, offshore.” That is a broad transport comparison, not a rule that a pipeline is always the best choice for every project. IEA, About CCUS.
Ships can offer more routing flexibility, particularly where several offshore storage facilities can accept CO₂, and may support early regional hubs. Shipping may also be cost-effective over long distances, especially where domestic storage resources are limited. The choice depends on factors such as distance, volume, geography, existing infrastructure and regulation. Neither option changes the fact that methanol synthesis performs a different job.

What the cost and emissions estimates do—and do not—show
Historical production-cost estimates
In its 2019 analysis, the IEA estimated that CO₂-derived methanol and methane production costs in most world regions were 2–7 times those of fossil counterparts. The same analysis estimated that electricity typically accounted for 40–70% of production costs. These are historical estimates, not current quotations or universal project costs; the importance of electricity also underscores the pathway’s dependence on affordable low-carbon power. IEA, Putting CO₂ to Use.
In a separate broad comparison, the IEA estimated cost premiums of around 20–40% for CCUS-equipped ammonia and methanol production from natural gas, and 50–115% for electrolytic-hydrogen routes, relative to unabated counterparts. Those estimates reflect varying energy prices and technological uncertainty. They compare production routes—not methanol against a pipeline—and should not be read as current project prices. IEA, Turning carbon into value: The emergence of industrial CCU.

Product use is not permanent storage
The IEA reported that a best-case scenario in the literature it reviewed put potential emissions reductions for methanol at 74–93% compared with conventional production routes. That is a conditional literature range, not a guaranteed reduction for every project. Actual climate performance depends on the CO₂ source, emissions from hydrogen and electricity, the product displaced, and what happens to the carbon when the methanol is used. IEA, Putting CO₂ to Use.
If methanol is burned as fuel, its carbon is released. Captured fossil CO₂ used in a fuel should therefore not be described as permanently removed from the atmosphere. The IEA also says CO₂ use is not expected to deliver emissions reductions on the same scale as carbon capture and storage (CCS). Reusing carbon in a product and storing it durably are different climate outcomes. IEA, Putting CO₂ to Use.

How to compare options for a real project
A fair decision needs a defined project and a matched comparison, not a generic claim that methanol is cheaper or greener than a pipeline. Start with these questions:
- What is the objective? Is the project moving CO₂, storing it, or converting it into a saleable product?
- Where and how much? Specify the capture origin, destination, annual volume and distance. Large onshore volumes generally favor pipelines; long-distance routes, offshore destinations or a need for flexible routing may support shipping.
- What powers methanol production? Assess the availability, cost and emissions of low-carbon electricity and hydrogen.
- Where does the carbon come from, and where does it go? Distinguish fossil, biogenic or directly air-captured CO₂, then account for whether the carbon is stored or released after the methanol is used.
- Are the boundaries consistent? Include capture, conditioning, transport, conversion, product use and storage where relevant in both options’ financial and lifecycle-emissions comparisons.
The cited sources do not establish a universal project-level break-even point between pipeline transport and methanol production. That result requires project-specific assumptions about route, scale, energy, hydrogen, carbon source, product offtake and storage.
