Gold Jewellery: Should You Sell to a Jeweller or for Scrap?

The best route depends on the piece: compare written net scrap offers with a second-hand or auction valuation when the jewellery may be worth more than its metal.

Compare the net offers before you decide. Selling for scrap can make sense for broken or low-resale jewellery; a wearable, distinctive, branded, antique or stone-set piece may be worth more as jewellery. Neither route guarantees the better price: the result depends on the item, buyer, fees and location.

Choose the route that values what your piece is worth

A scrap-focused buyer mainly assesses the precious metal. A second-hand buyer or auction may also value the design, condition, brand, age or desirability. Ask for a scrap offer, but do not accept it as the only valuation if the piece could have resale or collectible appeal.

Route When it may suit What to check
Jeweller or gold buyer pricing mainly for metal A quick sale for broken or low-resale jewellery Tested fineness, assessed weight, deductions, fees, payment terms and net payout
Second-hand jewellery sale A wearable, desirable, branded, antique or distinctive item Comparable resale demand, seller fees, time to sell and whether the offer is firm
Auction A potentially valuable or collectible piece where competitive bidding may matter Estimate versus likely hammer price, commission and other charges, timeline and reserve terms

The National Association of Jewellers describes an immediate over-the-counter second-hand purchase as a liquidation value and says it is generally the lowest valuation. That is trade-body guidance, not a guarantee about every buyer or transaction. Read its pricing code.

Understand how a scrap offer is calculated

Fineness matters as much as weight

Gold jewellery is commonly an alloy, so gross weight is not the same as the weight of pure gold. A Trading Standards consumer leaflet gives 18-carat gold as 75% gold and 9-carat gold as 37.5% gold. Weighing a piece beforehand can help you follow a buyer’s calculation, but a scale cannot establish its purity or predict the payout. See the Trading Standards leaflet.

Ask what will be deducted

Ask the buyer to explain the tested fineness and assessed weight, the price basis, and any deductions for stones or non-gold parts. Check whether testing, refining, postage or other charges apply. Request the final offer and its conditions in writing before agreeing to sell; headline rates alone do not show what you will receive.

Check whether the piece has value beyond its metal

Condition, design, maker, age and buyer demand can matter to a second-hand or auction valuation. Get another opinion before selling a piece with apparent resale appeal for its metal alone. Do not assume small diamonds or coloured stones will add to a scrap offer: the National Association of Jewellers notes many buyers may pay nothing for them unless they are very high quality. A specialist assessment may be appropriate when stones or collectibility appear significant.

Compare offers safely

  1. Record the item. Photograph each piece and note visible hallmarks before seeking valuations. Trading Standards particularly recommends photographs if you are posting jewellery.
  2. Weigh it at home. Use the reading as a way to understand an offer, not as a purity test or guaranteed payout estimate.
  3. Get more than one valuation. Trading Standards advises taking jewellery to several buyers and checking current gold prices. Ask each to state the tested fineness, assessed weight, price basis, deductions, fees and net amount.
  4. Compare like with like. Check the same details across offers and compare the amount you would actually receive, along with payment terms and conditions.
  5. Seek a resale or auction opinion where relevant. Do this before accepting a scrap-only price for an intact, desirable or potentially collectible piece.

If using a postal buyer, understand the process and costs first, keep photographs and records, and compare the final offer with an in-person alternative. A postal buyer may not tell you the value until after receiving and assessing the item; the Trading Standards leaflet cautions sellers to account for that uncertainty.

Use hallmark guidance for the right country

Hallmark rules vary internationally, so an absent mark is not universal proof of fraud. In the UK, a hallmark is an independent indication of precious-metal purity applied by an Assay Office. UK Government guidance says gold articles under 1 gram are exempt from compulsory hallmarking; this is a UK-specific legal threshold, not a general international rule. Read the UK hallmarking guidance. The World Gold Council also describes variation in national hallmarking and fineness-marking systems: Gold hallmarks and maker’s marks.

If you are selling in India, the Bureau of Indian Standards says consumers may sell old hallmarked or unhallmarked jewellery to jewellers. Its FAQ also directs consumers to BIS complaint channels and HUID checks through the BIS Care app, and describes remedies for purity shortfalls in hallmarked articles under BIS Rules 2018. These routes and protections apply to India, not other markets. See the BIS hallmarking FAQs.
