City of Canning residents can request a free, on-demand Good Sammy collection for eligible, good-quality pre-loved items. Book through the City’s request process or call 1300 422 664 before putting anything on the verge. The service has an annual bag limit and does not accept rubbish, electronics or bulky goods.
How to request a Good Sammy collection
- Submit a request first. Use the City of Canning’s on-demand donation collection service request process or call 1300 422 664. Do not set items out before the request.
- Prepare eligible goods. Use a free yellow plastic bag collected from a specified City location, or use your own bag, box or tub within the weight rules below.
- Wait for the collection reminder. The City says it will send a reminder by text or email.
- Set items on the verge at the permitted time. Put them out after 6 pm the evening before collection, or before 7 am on collection day.

What can be collected, and how much?
The City lists quality pre-loved clothing, shoes, handbags, clothing accessories, sheets, towels, kitchenware and toys. Items should be clean, in good working order and resalable, in keeping with Good Sammy’s donation guidance.
- Residents are entitled to collections of up to 10 bags per financial year.
- Each bag must weigh less than 10 kg.
- A box or tub weighing 10 kg or less is also allowed.
- Bags, boxes and tubs are not returned, so do not use a container you need back.
What does not belong in the donation pickup?
The donation service does not accept televisions, computers, electrical items, car tyres or parts, hazardous household waste, general rubbish, oversized or overweight bags, mattresses or white goods. Do not leave these items out as part of a Good Sammy collection.

For excluded items, use the City’s On-demand Waste Services information to check whether a separate collection or disposal option applies. Eligibility and preparation rules can differ by service.
What happens to donated goods?
The City says donated goods are resold through Good Sammy op shops to keep usable items in circulation. Sale proceeds support Good Sammy’s work providing employment to Western Australians living with a disability. Not every donation is guaranteed to be resold; the City reported that 95% of items collected during the early trial were deemed suitable for resale in a June 2025 update.

How the City–Good Sammy partnership has developed
The City reported that the partnership began in November 2024 as a 12-month trial. In its 19 June 2025 update, it said the service had collected more than three tonnes from 73 Canning households. Those figures describe the program at that time, not its current total.
A later City partnership page says the donation-service trial was extended into 2026 and reports more than 6,400 kg collected since the program began, alongside an estimated 102 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions prevented. The City attributes the emissions estimate to Charitable Reuse Australia 2025 and the National Transport Commission, and frames it as emissions associated with manufacturing new clothing, linen, footwear, toys and kitchenware rather than reusing donated goods. The page does not show a publication date in the available information, so treat these as figures reported on that City page, not as a dated 2026 measurement.
