Glencore’s reported A$23.5 billion contribution refers to Australia as a whole in calendar 2023—not Western Australia alone. A PerthNow page titled “Glencore proud of contribution to WA” is labeled advertiser content and presents company messaging; it does not provide a WA-only economic total or independently measured outcomes for the community partnerships it mentions.
What does the A$23.5 billion figure cover?
Glencore reported a total direct economic contribution of A$23.5 billion across regional, state and national economies in Australia during calendar 2023. The company’s report describes the total as including wages and salaries, spending on goods and services, taxes and royalties, and support for community partnerships. It is not a figure for Western Australia alone. Glencore’s Australia profile and its 2023 economic contribution report are the company’s sources for these figures.
The report’s accounting scope is not identical for every component. Its notes say federal income-tax figures represent Glencore’s share, while most other figures include 100% of managed or participated operations and joint-venture partners’ interests. For example, the report identifies Hunter Valley Operations as independently managed and held 51% by Yancoal and 49% by Glencore. The total should therefore be read as a company-reported contribution calculated under the report’s stated conventions, not as a uniform ownership-share measure.
What Australian figures did Glencore report for 2023?
These are company-reported figures for Australia in calendar 2023, not a breakdown for WA:
| Measure | Glencore-reported figure | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Direct economic contribution | A$23.5 billion | Across regional, state and national economies in Australia |
| Employees and contractors | 17,460 | Australia |
| Goods and services spending | A$12.9 billion | Australia |
| Suppliers | 7,000 | Australian suppliers |
| Taxes, royalties and rates | A$8.2 billion | Paid to federal, state and local governments |
| Wages and salaries | A$2.4 billion | Australia, as reported in Glencore’s corporate profile |
The measures describe different aspects of activity; they should not be added together as though they were separate amounts outside the A$23.5 billion total. In particular, the total itself includes several contribution categories.
What does the article establish about Western Australia?
The PerthNow item is explicitly labeled “Advertiser Content,” identifies Glencore as the advertiser, and attributes its statements to Cassandra McCarthy, Glencore Australia Head of Corporate Affairs. Its accessible text does not show a publication date. It names Western Australian Goldfields community groups, including Leonora Bowls Club, Goldfields Aboriginal Language Centre and Mount Margaret remote community school, but gives no WA-specific economic breakdown.

McCarthy says Glencore has invested “over $150 million in partnerships across regional Australia” to date. The sponsored article does not specify the period covered, a WA share, or amounts for individual recipients. Nor does it provide independently measured outcomes for the named partnerships. The claim should not be treated as a WA total or as proof of a particular community-level result. Read the PerthNow advertiser-content page.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should readers interpret Glencore’s claims?
- Separate company reporting from independent verification. The figures above are reported by Glencore; the cited material does not independently establish them.
- Keep geography attached to every number. The A$23.5 billion and other listed figures are Australian totals, not WA-only measures.
- Check definitions before comparing miners. A useful comparison needs the same reporting year, geography, contribution categories and treatment of joint ventures and ownership interests. The cited sources do not provide a peer comparison that would support ranking Glencore against other miners.
