A 2019 report put his fortune at £98 million, while a 2016 estimate cited about 1.18 billion Swedish kronor. These are differently sourced reports, not confirmed, directly comparable measures of his wealth or the final value of his estate.
What was George Michael worth when he died?
The clearest answer is that published figures differ, and neither of the reports cited here establishes a definitive net worth. Kurier reported in 2019 that George Michael left a fortune of £98 million, attributing the figure to The Sun and saying court papers were issued on 30 May. The underlying grant was not directly reviewed for that report here, so £98 million is best described as a figure reported in connection with probate—not as an independently verified net-worth calculation. Kurier’s 2019 report
Aftonbladet reported an estimated fortune of about 1.18 billion Swedish kronor in 2016. Its article mentioned property, song rights and valuable art, but the figure was presented as an estimate, not a probate total. Aftonbladet’s 2016 report
Why the estimates are not directly comparable
The reports were published in different years, use different currencies and describe their figures differently. One is a secondary report linking a pound figure to court papers; the other is a contemporaneous estimate in Swedish kronor. The available information does not establish whether either figure is gross or net, a snapshot of wealth during Michael’s lifetime, or the final value of his estate. Converting one currency into another would not resolve those differences.

“Net worth,” a probate estate value and the amount ultimately distributed to beneficiaries are separate measures. What is known about his estate and beneficiaries?
Kurier reported that Michael’s sisters, Yioda and Melanie, were expected to receive the largest share, including two London properties, and that his father was reported to inherit a stud farm. These details are secondary reporting about the will; the underlying will and final estate accounts were not reviewed here. Kurier’s report on the reported inheritance

In general, personal representatives manage estate assets, settle debts and taxes, and distribute what remains according to the will or applicable law. That process explains why a reported estate figure should not automatically be treated as the amount beneficiaries received. It does not establish Michael’s specific final accounts. For context only, The Guardian reproduced a statement from Oxfordshire senior coroner Darren Salter on 7 March 2017: “Inquiries into the death of George Michael have been concluded and the final postmortem report received.” It does not establish a wealth or estate figure. The Guardian’s 2017 report
