A reported phosphate-rock occurrence in southwestern Norway has attracted attention because Norge Mining says it identified the deposit in 2018 and estimates it contains at least 70 billion tonnes of mineralized rock. That is a company-reported estimate, not an independently established reserve. The headline’s $12 trillion valuation is not supported by a disclosed calculation in the coverage reviewed, and the evidence does not establish that the deposit is the world’s largest by verified reserves.
Where is the reported phosphate deposit?
The occurrence is in southwestern Norway and is associated with exploration by Norge Mining. The company says it first identified it in 2018. Euractiv reported the company’s estimate in June 2023; a later headline published by Daily Galaxy in May 2025 described the find as the world’s largest and worth $12 trillion.
Those descriptions need qualification. The available reporting does not independently verify a global ranking, and the $12 trillion figure is not accompanied by a transparent valuation method. It should not be treated as the deposit’s established market value.
What does the 70-billion-tonne figure measure?
Euractiv attributes an estimate of at least 70 billion tonnes of phosphate rock to Norge Mining. The sources reviewed do not establish that tonnage as an audited reserve or show how much material could be economically mined and processed.

That distinction matters. A mineralized-rock estimate describes material identified or estimated in the ground; a reserve is a narrower category tied to demonstrated economic extraction under defined conditions. The available sources do not provide the technical disclosure needed to assess the Norwegian figure’s grade, drill coverage, recoverability, or economics.
How does the estimate compare with global figures?
The U.S. Geological Survey’s 2026 summary reports more than 300 billion tons of global phosphate-rock resources and 74 billion tons of global reserves. These are worldwide commodity statistics, not independent confirmation of Norge Mining’s estimate. The categories and units should not be treated as interchangeable.

Is the deposit really worth $12 trillion?
The $12 trillion figure appears in the 2025 headline coverage, but that article does not provide a valuation calculation, and the reviewed sources do not establish a primary basis for the amount. Tonnage in the ground is not equivalent to saleable product or project revenue: valuation would depend on factors such as grade, recoverable output, processing costs, infrastructure, permitting, financing, market prices, and the time required to produce material.

Without a disclosed method and project-level technical and economic evidence, $12 trillion is not a verified value for the Norwegian occurrence. The number should be read as an unsupported headline claim, not as an asset valuation or a forecast of income.
Why does phosphate rock matter?
Phosphate rock is an important upstream source of phosphorus used in fertilizer production. USGS describes phosphate-rock minerals as the only significant global resources of phosphorus. That makes a large, accessible source potentially relevant to agricultural supply, but potential significance is different from a producing mine.

Daily Galaxy’s May 2025 article says a first mine was expected by 2029. That is a reported projection, not a confirmed construction or opening schedule. The sources reviewed do not establish a feasibility study, financing decision, final approvals, permitting status, or a firm current start date.

Euractiv also reported that the company revised an earlier claim about supply duration to at least 50 years, down from 100 years. This is a company claim reported by Euractiv, not a guarantee that the deposit will supply phosphate for that period.
What is established—and what is not?
- Established in the reporting: the occurrence is in southwestern Norway, Norge Mining is associated with the exploration, and the company says it identified it in 2018.
- Attributed to the company: an estimate of at least 70 billion tonnes of mineralized phosphate rock.
- Not established in the reviewed sources: an independently verified reserve, economic recoverability, project economics, final approvals, financing, a firm mine-opening date, or a substantiated $12 trillion valuation.
